When circumstances become difficult, it is easy to consume more negativity, lose your sense of control and stop investing in your own development.
Recorded during the 2020 lockdowns, this short solo episode is Peter Boolkah’s guided tour through earlier podcast episodes about resilience, mindset, continuous learning and overcoming adversity.
Peter points listeners towards conversations and teaching episodes featuring Byron Nelson, Michael Losier, Elizabeth McCormick, James Malinchak, Alden Mills, Mark Divine and Robert Glazer.
You’ll hear:
The context may have changed since this episode was recorded, but its central message remains relevant: failing to learn limits your ability to adapt, lead and grow.

How much time and energy are you spending on business problems you cannot control?
Government decisions, economic conditions and unexpected disruption may affect your company significantly. But worrying, complaining and arguing about circumstances you cannot change does nothing to move the business forward.
In this solo episode, Peter Boolkah uses Stephen Covey’s circles of concern and influence to explain where business owners should direct their attention during difficult periods.
Your circle of concern contains everything that affects you but remains outside your control.
Your circle of influence contains the decisions, actions and responses you can shape.
Peter explains how gym owners responded when lockdown forced their physical premises to close. They could not overturn the government restrictions, but they could reconsider how they delivered training and begin working with customers online.
Peter faced the same decision when international travel and in-person strategy sessions disappeared from his coaching business.
You’ll discover:
You cannot control every event that affects your business.
You can control where you invest your time, attention and energy and what you decide to do next.
This episode was recorded during the first COVID-19 lockdown in May 2020. The lockdown provides the example, but the underlying framework applies to any period of business uncertainty or disruption.

Why do capable business owners sometimes make poor decisions during disruption?
Because before you can solve a new problem, you may first need to accept that the old reality has gone.
In this candid solo episode, Peter Boolkah uses the change curve to examine his own emotional response to the first COVID-19 lockdown. He moves through shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance, explaining how each stage affected his energy, thinking and business decisions.
For Peter, acceptance did not mean approving of what had happened or abandoning hope. It meant seeing the situation clearly enough to begin designing a realistic response.
You’ll discover:
Peter also explains how the loss of international travel forced him to reconsider a business and lifestyle he had spent ten years building.
The broader leadership lesson remains highly relevant: a company cannot adapt to its new circumstances while its founder is still emotionally negotiating with the past.
This episode was recorded in May 2020. References to lockdowns, travel restrictions and economic predictions reflect that period and should be understood as historical context. The change-management principles remain applicable to any major business disruption.

When circumstances damage your business, you have two choices: remain focused on what has happened to you or take ownership of what you do next.
Recorded during the first COVID-19 lockdown, this is one of Peter Boolkah’s more direct and unfiltered solo episodes.
Peter responds to the criticism surrounding a free podcasting event promoted by entrepreneur Rob Moore. Some commentators believed that promoting services during a crisis was inappropriate and accused Rob of exploiting vulnerable people.
Peter sees it differently.
After losing approximately 70% of his own business because he could no longer travel or undertake speaking engagements, Peter could have waited for the old world to return. Instead, he began marketing, redesigning his programmes and learning the skills he would need to operate in a changed environment.
In this episode, you’ll discover:
This episode was recorded in May 2020 and reflects the heightened emotions and economic uncertainty of the first lockdown. Its most enduring message is not about any particular advertisement or individual. It is about refusing to surrender your agency when circumstances change.
You may not control what happens around you, but you can control whether you learn, adapt and take action.

Why do some businesses secure funding while others are refused, even when government-backed lending schemes are available?
Recorded during the first COVID-19 lockdown, this solo episode examines what banks actually look for when deciding whether to lend to a business.
Peter Boolkah explains why a government guarantee does not automatically make an unhealthy business fundable. Banks still need confidence in your figures, your cash requirements and your ability to repay what you borrow.
If your forecast says you need 100,000 for 12 months, but the lender’s analysis suggests 250,000 over 18 months, your credibility immediately becomes a problem.
You’ll discover:
The lending schemes discussed were specific to April 2020. The guarantee percentages and programme details should therefore be treated as historical context, not current financial guidance.
The enduring lesson is simple: a business that understands its cash, knows what it needs and can explain how borrowed money will be repaid is far more likely to inspire confidence.

Being excellent at the technical work does not automatically make somebody an effective business owner.
During favourable economic conditions, that distinction can remain hidden. Customers are buying, revenue is coming in, and the owner can continue riding the wave.
A serious downturn exposes the gaps.
In this solo episode, Peter Boolkah explains why founders must learn the fundamentals of business ownership rather than relying exclusively on the technical skills that originally allowed them to start the company.
Drawing on Michael E. Gerber’s The E-Myth Revisited, Peter explores the difference between doing the work and building, financing and leading the business.
You’ll discover:
A founder’s technical expertise may create the business, but it cannot perform every role the company requires.
To build a stronger and less founder-dependent organisation, the owner must keep learning: cash, strategy, planning, leadership, people and the economics of the business itself.

Remote working cannot succeed if managers rely on watching people to determine whether they are productive.
It requires clear outcomes, professional habits, suitable systems, deliberate communication and trust.
Recorded during the first COVID-19 lockdown, this solo episode captures Peter Boolkah’s seven recommendations for making working from home more focused, productive and sustainable.
Peter challenges the assumption that employees must be physically visible to be managed effectively. If leaders cannot measure performance through objectives, outcomes and accountability, being in the same office will not solve the underlying management problem.
You’ll discover:
Peter also discusses:
Remote work does not remove the need for structure. It makes a good structure even more important.
When expectations, communication and outcomes are clear, a team can remain accountable without the founder or manager constantly looking over everybody’s shoulder.
ARCHIVE CONTEXT
This episode was recorded on 7 April 2020 during the first COVID-19 lockdown.
Some comments about clothing, home backgrounds, pets and family interruptions reflect the emergency transition to remote work at that time. Modern remote and hybrid working should be judged primarily by performance, communication, security and sustainable outcomes, not whether somebody’s home resembles a traditional office.

Strong leadership requires two apparently contradictory abilities.
You must retain faith that you can ultimately succeed while confronting the most difficult facts about your current situation.
Ignoring reality is dangerous. But surrendering all hope can be equally destructive.
In this solo episode, Peter Boolkah explains the Stockdale Paradox, a leadership concept popularised by Jim Collins in Good to Great and named after Admiral James Stockdale.
Stockdale survived nearly eight years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam without knowing when—or whether—he would be released. His experience demonstrated the difference between durable faith and optimism built around arbitrary deadlines.
The prisoners who continually convinced themselves they would be home by Christmas, Easter, or Thanksgiving suffered devastating disappointment when each deadline passed.
Stockdale adopted a different position: believe that you will ultimately prevail, but never deny the brutal facts confronting you today.
You’ll discover:
Originally recorded during the first COVID-19 lockdowns, this episode has value far beyond the pandemic.
The same principle applies whenever a company faces falling revenue, operational disruption, a failing strategy or an uncertain future:
Do not pretend everything is fine.
Confront reality, make the necessary decisions and retain faith that disciplined action can still produce a successful outcome.

Artificial intelligence will change jobs, industries and established business models.
The question is not whether every prediction about AI will come true. The important question is whether you are prepared to adapt as technology changes the world around you.
In this short solo episode, Peter Boolkah examines the fear that artificial intelligence will take people’s jobs.
Drawing on the decline of large-scale automotive manufacturing in Dagenham, Peter argues that technological disruption is not new. Businesses have always invested in machinery and technology that can improve quality, lower costs and increase efficiency.
Fighting that change will not preserve an outdated business model forever.
You’ll discover:
The central message is simple: the world will not stop changing simply because we are uncomfortable with that change.
Business owners must continue learning, question their existing model and remain willing to evolve.
ARCHIVE CONTEXT
This episode was recorded in March 2020, before the widespread adoption of generative AI. It is a short strategic reflection on technological disruption rather than a practical guide to implementing AI.

Most businesses do not fail during a crisis because they were fundamentally bad businesses.
They fail because conditions change, leaders become paralysed by uncertainty and important decisions are made too late.
Recorded in March 2020 as the scale of the coronavirus pandemic was becoming clear, this solo episode captures Peter Boolkah’s immediate advice to business owners facing an unprecedented disruption.
Although the original context was COVID-19, the five-part framework remains relevant to almost any serious business crisis:
Peter explains why business owners must prepare before disruption reaches its most serious stage.
That means educating employees, testing remote-working arrangements, protecting access to information, identifying alternative suppliers, understanding how long the company can survive without revenue and speaking to banks or creditors before payments are missed.
You’ll discover:
This is both a historical snapshot and a practical business-resilience episode.
The central lesson remains highly relevant: you cannot control every crisis, but you can control how early you prepare, how clearly you think and how decisively you respond.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
This episode was recorded on 17 March 2020. References to public-health restrictions, isolation periods, statutory sick pay, travel restrictions and government support reflect the situation at that time and should not be treated as current guidance.
