  • Use Your Salary to Buy Freedom: Side Hustles and Financial Runway | Cody Berman

    Send us Fan Mail

Quitting your job before your new business can support you is not necessarily courageous.

It can be a serious cash-flow mistake.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with entrepreneur and financial-independence educator Cody Berman about using employment, side hustles and disciplined saving to create a safer route into entrepreneurship.

Cody began experimenting with businesses after reading The 4-Hour Workweek at 19. Several ideas failed, but even earning his first $100 outside conventional employment proved that another route was possible.

Rather than immediately quitting his job, Cody kept his living costs low, developed several side hustles and used his salary to build approximately $50,000 in savings.

With monthly expenses of around $1,000, that gave him a substantial financial runway from which to pursue entrepreneurship without requiring his businesses to succeed immediately.

    You’ll discover:

    • What Cody means by being a serial entrepreneur
    • Why business failures can become valuable stepping stones
    • How small amounts of independent income build confidence
    • What qualifies as a side hustle
    • Why Cody saved almost 90% of his corporate income
    • How low personal expenses create greater entrepreneurial flexibility
    • Why founders need financial runway before leaving employment
    • How a salary can finance your route out of salaried work
    • Why quitting without a proven concept frequently backfires
    • How part-time employment can support a growing business
    • Why you don’t need a revolutionary invention to succeed
    • How multiple income streams can reduce dependence on one employer
    • Why networking and repeated outreach changed Cody’s trajectory
    • How learning from failure develops entrepreneurial judgement

This is not a promise that everybody can reproduce Cody’s results.

It is a practical conversation about reducing risk while testing whether a business can generate genuine income.

You do not necessarily have to choose between remaining employed forever and immediately gambling everything on a new venture.

Your salary can become the tool that helps you build your escape.

    FINANCIAL CONTEXT

Financial independence does not have one universally accepted definition.

In this conversation, Cody describes a cash-flow-based version of financial independence in which income from side hustles, businesses and other sources covers his living costs and provides control over his time.

This differs from approaches based entirely on an invested portfolio capable of funding a person’s expenses indefinitely.

Side-hustle, business, property and so-called passive income can fluctuate and may require continuing work, capital and risk. Cody’s financial results are his personal experience and should not be treated as typical or guaranteed.

This episode provides general education and personal experience, not personalised financial, investment, tax or legal advice.

    ARCHIVE CONTEXT

  • Never Rely on One Bank: Protect Your Business Cash Flow

    Send us Fan Mail

If your company’s payroll, working capital and payment infrastructure all depend on one bank, that bank has become a single point of failure.

In this solo episode, Peter Boolkah explains why business owners should consider maintaining relationships with more than one banking provider.

Peter recounts the experience of a long-standing client whose bank decided it would not renew the company’s overdraft and gave the business seven days’ notice that it was closing the account.

After approximately 25 years with the same bank, the company suddenly faced the possibility of losing access to the money it needed for payroll.

Fortunately, the owner had already opened a second business account and kept money across both institutions. That decision allowed the company to continue paying its people.

    You’ll discover:

    • Why banking loyalty does not guarantee continuing support
    • How one banking relationship can become a single point of failure
    • Why access to cash is different from access to credit
    • How the disappearance of local relationship managers has changed business banking
    • Why every company needs financial and operational redundancy
    • How a second account can help protect payroll and critical payments
    • Why banking terms and lending criteria can change
    • How undercapitalisation increases a company’s vulnerability
    • Why founders should regularly stress-test their cash position
    • The importance of preparing alternative arrangements before a crisis occurs

The lesson is not that every bank will abandon its customers.

It is that no responsible business owner should allow the survival of the company to depend completely on one external institution.

    ARCHIVE AND FINANCIAL CONTEXT

This episode was recorded on 24 November 2021 and reflects one client’s experience during the economic disruption following the COVID-19 lockdowns.

UK banking regulations and deposit-protection limits have changed since the recording.

For many UK payment accounts opened on or after 28 April 2026, providers must generally give at least 90 days’ notice before closure and provide sufficiently detailed reasons, subject to specified exceptions. Older accounts and some business accounts can be governed by different requirements and contractual terms.

The UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme currently protects eligible deposits up to £120,000 per person or eligible company, per authorised firm. Different bank brands can share the same banking licence and therefore the same protection limit.

Account access, deposit protection and the availability of overdrafts or other credit facilities are separate issues. Review the current terms applying to your accounts and seek appropriately qualified financial or legal advice where necessary.

  • Stop Hiding Behind Your Business: Public Speaking for Founders | Tom Bailey

    Send us Fan Mail

A great business can remain the world’s best-kept secret if its founder is unwilling to communicate.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with Tom Bailey, founder of Succeed Through Speaking, about public speaking, personal branding and why business owners can no longer afford to hide behind their companies.

Video, podcasting, virtual events and social media have changed how people discover businesses and decide whom to trust. Customers increasingly want to hear from the people behind the company not simply another polished corporate brand.

Tom explains why speaking is a trainable skill, how founders can begin without immediately stepping onto a large stage and why podcasting provides a relatively comfortable route into public communication.

    You’ll discover:

    • Why technically brilliant founders often remain invisible
    • How fear of judgement prevents business owners from communicating
    • Why people increasingly connect with people rather than corporate brands
    • How an authentic personal brand can attract the right customers
    • Why effective marketing should disqualify unsuitable prospects
    • How podcasting provides a lower-pressure introduction to speaking
    • Why one conversation can become video, audio, articles and shorter clips
    • How coaching and immediate feedback accelerate improvement
    • Why good audio matters more than expensive equipment
    • How weaker businesses can outsell better competitors through stronger communication

    The central lesson is simple:

You do not need to become a celebrity, but you do need to become capable of communicating your value with clarity and confidence.

  • Remote Teams Need Trust, Not Control | Yaro Starak

    Send us Fan Mail

If you need to see people working before you trust that work is happening, remote working may not be the real problem.

The problem may be how you manage.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with Yaro Starak, co-founder of InboxDone and a long-time online entrepreneur, about managing remote teams through results, trust and clearly defined responsibilities.

Yaro had already spent approximately 20 years working with distributed teams when this conversation was recorded. His approach is straightforward: measure the quality and consistency of someone’s output, not the number of hours they spend sitting at a desk.

Peter and Yaro discuss why so many leaders struggle to relinquish control, how company culture can be created without a shared office and why effective remote management depends on hiring, onboarding, training and communication.

    You’ll discover:

    • Why some managers confuse physical visibility with productivity
    • How to manage people according to output rather than time
    • Where output-based management becomes more difficult
    • Why remote culture must be built deliberately
    • How careful hiring and onboarding create greater autonomy
    • Why trust does not mean abandoning accountability
    • How remote working has given talented people more options
    • Why rest and flexibility can improve performance
    • How industrial-age management habits hold back digital businesses
    • How delegating email can remove another source of founder dependency

This conversation was recorded in 2021, but its central question remains highly relevant:

Are you creating an autonomous team, or a team that cannot function unless you are watching?

  • Build Trust Before Culture: Compassionate Leadership | Donato Tramuto

    Send us Fan Mail

    Culture doesn’t come first.

    Trust does.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with Donato Tramuto, former public-company CEO and author of The Double Bottom Line, about why compassion is not a weakness in leadership and why empathy without action is not enough.

Donato’s research combined extensive interviews with 40 leaders and a survey of more than 1,500 people. It revealed a significant gap between how senior leaders believe their organisations operate and how employees actually experience them.

The conversation examines how authoritarian leadership, generational assumptions and an excessive focus on hierarchy can damage trust, restrict innovation and make talented employees feel that their contribution doesn’t matter.

    You will discover:

    • Why compassionate leadership is strong rather than soft
    • The gap between how leaders and employees experience workplace culture
    • Why competition can exist even when leaders believe people are cooperating
    • How age bias operates in both directions
    • Why younger employees should not have to “pay their dues” before their ideas matter
    • Why technology capability should not be confused with genuine competence
    • Why trust must be established before values and culture are imposed
    • Donato’s three-stage model of tenderness, trust and tenacity
    • Why leaders should measure output rather than visible activity
    • How Donato involved 3,000 employees before announcing a company strategy
    • Why compassion means empathy followed by action
    • How compassionate leadership can improve the leader’s own wellbeing
    • Why employee turnover can be a warning that leaders are reading the wrong numbers

For founders, compassion does not mean avoiding accountability or lowering standards.

It means creating enough trust for people to speak honestly, contribute ideas, accept responsibility and operate without waiting for the founder to dictate every decision.

That is how compassionate leadership reduces founder dependency rather than creating it.

  • How to Run a Distributed Team Without Micromanaging | Matthew Hunt

    Send us Fan Mail

Remote teams don’t usually fail because people are working in different locations.

They fail because communication is unclear, responsibilities are poorly defined and important information becomes trapped in meetings, inboxes and individual people’s heads.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with entrepreneur Matthew Hunt about the operating system behind an effective distributed team.

Matthew has built three digital marketing agencies and exited two. Two of those businesses operated with globally distributed teams, while the third occupied an expensive physical office in central Toronto.

That experience gave Matthew a revealing comparison between the two models—and taught him that a successful remote company requires far more than giving everybody Slack and scheduling video calls.

    You will discover:

    • The hidden financial commitments attached to a prestigious office
    • How Matthew created a 24-hour workflow across Canada and the Philippines
    • Why every handoff must include confirmation from the person receiving it
    • How asynchronous video can replace unnecessary meetings and lengthy emails
    • Why project communication should remain attached to the relevant project
    • How documented standard operating procedures reduce dependency
    • Why a small, simple technology stack is usually more effective
    • How communication tools can create useful boundaries
    • Why technology should make work easier rather than monitor employees
    • How to manage through outcomes instead of hours and physical presence
    • Why remote culture must be created intentionally
    • How industrial-age management creates founder and managerial dependency

The lesson for founders is clear: if work stops whenever you are unavailable, the problem is not where the team works.

The problem is how the business has been designed.

  • Can You Predict the Market? Risk, Emotion and Investor Discipline | Roger Khoury

    Send us Fan Mail

Why do amateur investors frequently lose money while trying to produce professional-level returns?

In this 2021 conversation, Peter Boolkah speaks with Roger Khoury, founder of Market Forecasting Academy and creator of a proprietary framework called Market Vulnerability Analysis.

Roger argues that investors should stop concentrating exclusively on opportunities to make money and pay greater attention to situations in which they are less likely to lose it.

    The conversation explores:

    • Why attempting to time market highs and lows is difficult
    • The difference between managing risk and pretending it can be eliminated
    • How pressure and overconfidence affect investment decisions
    • Why a 50% loss requires a 100% return to recover
    • The dangers of chasing quick returns
    • Why trading capital must be money you can afford to lose
    • How emotional stress can undermine an otherwise sensible process
    • The risks involved in short selling and trading falling markets
    • Why discipline matters more than excitement
    • Roger’s proprietary approach to analysing market conditions

  • Stop Measuring Hours: Build a Productive Team Without Micromanaging | Michael Teape

    Send us Fan Mail

Productivity is not the number of hours someone spends at a desk, how short their lunch break is or whether their online status shows them as available.

It is the value they create.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with Michael Teape, co-founder of Teape Training International, about replacing outdated measures of productivity with a more effective, outcome-focused approach.

Recorded during the rapid transition to remote and hybrid working, the conversation explores why some people adapted successfully while others became trapped by email, meetings, constant interruptions and the pressure to appear permanently available.

Michael introduces three mindsets that can help people take back control of their working day: the growth mindset, the routine mindset and the control mindset.

    You will discover:

    • Why physical presence is a poor measure of productivity
    • How meetings and email create the appearance of work without meaningful output
    • Why managers must stop rewarding visibility and start measuring results
    • How your routines can either support you or control you
    • Why constantly responding to copied emails creates unnecessary dependency
    • How to reduce interruptions without becoming unavailable
    • Why important work should happen before opening your inbox
    • How a control mindset prevents people from becoming reactive
    • Why focused work can produce more value than a long working day
    • How leaders can give people greater autonomy without losing accountability

For founders, the lesson is particularly important. If everybody must remain permanently available to you—or you must remain permanently available to everybody—the business has not developed genuine autonomy.

It has simply digitised the Hamster Wheel Trap®.

  • What Everest Base Camp Teaches Founders About Scaling | Helen Yu

    Send us Fan Mail

Scaling a business has more in common with climbing a mountain than simply aiming for the summit.

You must prepare for conditions you cannot predict, adapt when the plan fails, acclimatise before moving higher, listen to experienced guides and make sure the team comes back safely.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with Helen Yu, founder and CEO of Tigon Advisory and author of Ascend Your Start-Up: Conquer the 5 Disconnects to Accelerate Growth.

Helen shares the story of trekking to Everest Base Camp to fulfil a promise she made to the grandmother who raised her. Having never previously climbed a mountain, she had to prepare physically and emotionally, research an unfamiliar environment and adapt when equipment failed and other members of the group withdrew.

She translates that experience into practical lessons for founders and leadership teams.

    You’ll discover:

    • How to prepare for events you cannot accurately predict
    • Why preparation is different from attempting to control everything
    • How Helen adapted when her camera failed during the journey
    • Why founders must concentrate on attitude, effort and decisions
    • How acclimatisation applies to scaling a business
    • Why moving forward sometimes requires taking a step backwards
    • The importance of listening to experienced advisers and specialists
    • Why the strongest person is not always the one who completes the journey
    • How customer feedback prevents founders from building in isolation
    • Why a successful climb includes bringing the team home
    • The importance of recognising milestones and expressing gratitude
    • How Helen’s five growth disconnects help founders diagnose scaling problems

    Helen’s five disconnects are:

    • Product/Market Fit Disconnect
    • Minimum Viable Repeatability Disconnect
    • Customer Voice Disconnect
    • Process Disconnect
    • Measurement Disconnect

This conversation was recorded in 2021, but its lessons about preparation, adaptability, customer insight, disciplined execution and sustainable growth remain highly relevant.

  • How to Stay Decisive When Business Gets Difficult | Graham Whiley

    Send us Fan Mail

Business pressure is real. Financial problems, difficult employees, lost customers and uncertain markets cannot simply be eliminated through positive thinking.

What founders can improve is their ability to assess those circumstances, regulate their reactions and take constructive action before the situation becomes worse.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with executive coach Graham Whiley about mental fitness, resilience and decision-making during difficult periods.

Graham explains why mental fitness should be developed through regular practice, much like physical fitness. The objective is not to deny reality or pretend that difficult circumstances are positive. It is to become better equipped to respond without panic, avoidance or paralysis.

    You’ll discover:

    • What Graham means by mental fitness
    • Why resilience develops through repeated practice
    • How emotional reactions can intensify an already difficult situation
    • Why mental fitness is not the same as forced positivity
    • The danger of burying your head and hoping a problem disappears

    ABOUT PETER BOOLKAH

Peter Boolkah is a business coach, author and speaker who has spent more than 20 years helping business owners build stronger, more valuable businesses that do not depend on them for everything.

He is the creator of The Hamster Wheel Trap® and author of Your Business Sucks: Build a Business That Works Without Destroying Your Life.

Peter works with founders and leadership teams on the issues that ultimately determine whether a business creates freedom or becomes another job: leadership, founder dependency, people, profit, execution, scaling, exit readiness and enterprise value.

His approach is direct, practical and built around one simple question:
