  • Technology, EMFs and Performance | Justin Frandson

    Send us Fan Mail

Modern business owners spend much of their day surrounded by phones, computers, routers, wireless devices and screens. But what effect does that technology have on concentration, sleep and performance?

In this archived 2022 conversation, Peter Boolkah speaks with athletic-performance coach Justin Frandson about Justin’s concerns regarding electromagnetic fields, wireless technology and the increasing amount of time people spend connected to electronic devices.

Justin explains the beliefs that led him to establish EMF Rocks and develop his grounding products. The conversation covers screen use, wireless devices, sleep, athletic performance, working from home and the practical steps Justin recommends for reducing exposure.

    Topics discussed include:

    • The growth in connected and wireless technology
    • Screen habits and working from home
    • The symptoms Justin attributes to electromagnetic fields
    • Technology use among professional and amateur athletes
    • Sleep, fatigue, concentration and performance
    • Proximity to phones, routers and wireless devices
    • Justin’s views on grounding and spending time in nature
    • His EMF Rocks grounding products

    IMPORTANT EVIDENCE NOTE

This episode contains the guest’s personal views and a number of medical and scientific claims that are not supported by established scientific consensus.

The World Health Organization states that no adverse health effect has been causally linked to exposure to wireless technology within established exposure limits. Radiofrequency energy from phones, Wi-Fi and 5G is non-ionising radiation. It does not possess enough energy to ionise atoms or directly damage DNA in the way that X-rays and other ionising radiation can.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as “possibly carcinogenic,” based on limited evidence, so research continues. That classification does not establish that ordinary wireless exposure causes cancer.

Claims made in this episode about EMFs causing mental-health conditions, pandemics, drug-related deaths or infectious diseases should not be treated as established medical facts. The discussion is preserved as an archive conversation and is not medical advice.

Anyone experiencing persistent fatigue, headaches, depression, cognitive difficulties or other health symptoms should consult an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

  • Stop Doing Everything Yourself: Build a Remote Team | Noel Andrews

    Send us Fan Mail

If every task, decision and customer delivery still passes through you, the problem is not simply your workload.

Your business has no capacity beyond its founder.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with Noel Andrews, founder and CEO of JobRack, about using remote hiring to build a capable team and reduce the operational burden on the business owner.

Noel explains why remote recruitment can give growing businesses access to a wider talent pool—not only virtual assistants and task-based workers, but operations managers, recruiters and experienced people capable of thinking, improving systems and taking ownership.

They discuss the importance of defining the results you need, actively sourcing the right candidates, onboarding people properly and gradually giving them the autonomy to make decisions.

    You’ll discover:

    • Why founders must eventually delegate delivery and operations
    • How hiring ahead of growth can prevent capacity problems
    • Why your best candidates may not be actively using job boards
    • How remote employees can improve processes rather than simply complete tasks
    • Why successful hiring depends heavily on onboarding
    • How to create a culture in which employees can challenge the owner
    • Whether a head of operations really needs to share your office
    • Why outcomes matter more than monitoring people’s hours
    • How clear communication makes distributed teams work
    • Why hiring people who are better than you strengthens the business

This conversation was recorded in 2022 and includes references to the post-pandemic labour market, UK inflation and comparative salary levels at that time. Those figures should be treated as historical context rather than current salary, employment or compliance guidance.

  • How to Build a Business When Your Energy Is Limited | Raquel Hellenga

    Send us Fan Mail

What would you prioritise if your energy, health and working capacity could change without warning?

For entrepreneurs living with chronic illness or disability, that is not a hypothetical question. It shapes how they plan, sell, deliver work and design their businesses.

It also exposes a principle that applies to every founder: your time and energy are limited resources, so they should not be consumed by unnecessary work.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with life and business coach Raquel Hellenga about entrepreneurship, chronic illness, remote work and building within the reality of your available capacity.

Raquel was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis when she was seven. She shares how living with uncertainty taught her to distinguish between what she can influence and what lies outside her control.

    Peter and Raquel explore:

    • How chronic illness changes the way an entrepreneur approaches uncertainty
    • Why remote work can improve economic participation and accessibility
    • Why technology does not remove every barrier faced by disabled people
    • How acknowledging difficult emotions can support resilience
    • The difference between unavoidable pain and additional suffering
    • Why limited energy makes commercial priorities more important
    • How comfortable activities can distract founders from sales
    • Why founders should concentrate on work that creates genuine value
    • How constant busyness can prevent people from processing what they feel
    • The danger of waiting for circumstances to return to “normal”
    • How to design a business around the reality of your capacity
    • Why resilience means adapting, not pretending a constraint does not exist

This conversation was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2022. References to lockdowns, Omicron and a possible return to normal reflect that particular period.

Its enduring lesson is broader: acknowledge the conditions you are operating within, focus on what you can control and build a business that works with your available capacity rather than continually fighting against it.

    WELLBEING NOTE

Raquel discusses her personal experiences of chronic illness, depression, anxiety and ADHD. This episode provides personal and business perspectives, not medical advice.

  • The Loss You Don’t Realise You’re Grieving | Ray Warner

    Send us Fan Mail

Grief does not only follow the death of somebody we love.

It can also follow the loss of a job, income, relationship, routine, freedom or the future we believed we were building.

When that loss remains unrecognised, we can feel stuck, exhausted and unable to make decisions without understanding why.

In this archive episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with Ray Warner, who at the time described his work as life-after-loss coaching.

Ray shares the deeply personal experience of losing his first wife suddenly when he was 22, only one month after she had given birth to their daughter. He discusses how that loss affected his life and why people frequently avoid conversations about death, vulnerability and grief.

    Peter and Ray explore:

    • Why grief can follow many different forms of loss
    • How people can become trapped in a psychological “waiting room”
    • Why we may grieve the future we expected to experience
    • How prolonged uncertainty can affect entrepreneurs and decision-making
    • Signs that somebody may be struggling after a loss
    • Why recognising what has changed is an important first step
    • The value of talking to somebody who can offer an outside perspective
    • How a new vision can help people begin moving forward
    • Why meaningful support should be appropriate to the individual’s needs

This conversation was recorded in January 2022 and contains extensive references to the pandemic. Its broader message remains relevant: loss can affect people in ways they do not immediately recognise, and asking for appropriate support is not a weakness.

    IMPORTANT WELLBEING NOTE

This episode shares personal experience and general coaching perspectives. It is not medical advice, and coaching is not a substitute for assessment or treatment from a suitably qualified healthcare or mental-health professional.

  • No One Pays for Sweat Equity: Build a Business Buyers Want | Marvin L. Storm

    Send us Fan Mail

You may have spent 20 or 30 years building your business, working weekends and making enormous personal sacrifices.

Unfortunately, a buyer will not pay for your effort.

They will pay for the transferable value you have created: reliable cash flow, a capable team, documented systems, customer relationships, intellectual property, favourable contracts and a business that can continue performing without you.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with entrepreneur, author and Business Exit Stories podcast host Marvin L. Storm about preparing a business for sale before circumstances force the owner to leave.

Having built and exited several businesses himself, Marvin explains why owners frequently overestimate what their companies are worth, how poor preparation weakens their negotiating position and why exit planning should begin at least three years before a proposed sale.

    You’ll discover:

    • Why sweat equity does not determine a company’s valuation
    • What a buyer actually examines before making an offer
    • Why health problems, divorce, burnout and economic disruption often trigger rushed exits
    • How weak preparation allows experienced buyers to negotiate substantial discounts
    • Why multiple interested buyers can transform an owner’s negotiating position
    • How contracts, leases and other seemingly small decisions affect enterprise value
    • Why every business should be prepared for an unexpected exit
    • How founder dependency makes a company more difficult to sell
    • Why exit planning should influence decisions long before the owner wants to leave
    • How to approach family succession with the same discipline as an external sale

The objective is not simply to sell the company. It is to build a valuable, transferable business that gives the owner genuine choices.

This conversation was recorded in January 2022 and contains references to the pandemic. Its central message remains entirely relevant: the best time to prepare a business for sale is before you need to sell it.

  • Why Impostor Syndrome Keeps Your Business Invisible | Parham Albadvi

    Send us Fan Mail

You know your business needs greater visibility. You know you should publish content, appear on video and communicate what makes your work valuable.

Yet every time you try, the doubts appear:

Who am I to talk about this?

What if people discover that I am not as successful as they think?

    What if nobody responds?

The result is inconsistent marketing, missed opportunities and a business whose growth remains dependent on what the founder can persuade themselves to do.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with entrepreneur and marketing strategist Parham Albadvi about impostor syndrome, online comparison and the fear of putting yourself and your business in front of an audience.

Parham explains how his own failed business attempt, brief return to corporate employment and eventual move back into entrepreneurship taught him to stop treating failure as a verdict and start treating it as an experiment.

    Together, Peter and Parham explore:

    • Why comparison makes entrepreneurs reluctant to become visible
    • How social media’s highlight reels distort our perception of success
    • Why content should begin with a clear commercial intention
    • How one central idea can be repurposed across multiple channels
    • The difference between genuine purpose and purpose-washing
    • Why unclear goals lead to overthinking and paralysis by analysis
    • How shorter planning cycles can make progress feel achievable
    • Why confidence normally follows evidence and action
    • How to identify two measurable actions that could create a return
    • Why founder wellbeing matters when the business still depends heavily on its owner

This conversation was recorded in January 2022 and includes references to the pandemic and the Great Resignation. Those details place it in a particular moment, but its central lesson remains relevant: confidence rarely arrives before action.

  • Stop Waiting for Certainty: How to Move Forward When Fear Takes Over | Paul N. Larsen

    Send us Fan Mail

How long will you wait for circumstances to settle before making an important decision?

The uncomfortable truth is that complete certainty may never arrive.

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with executive coach and author Paul N. Larsen about fear, fixed mindsets, impostor syndrome and the self-awareness required to keep moving when the future remains uncertain.

Paul explains why fear can trap people inside familiar situations—even when those situations are no longer working. A founder may delay a decision, abandon a promising idea or return to something they dislike because familiarity feels safer than uncertainty.

Peter and Paul explore the difference between experiencing fear and allowing fear to make the decision. They also discuss a practical self-reflection exercise: keeping a simple thought diary to identify recurring patterns, assumptions and fears.

    You’ll discover:

    • Why waiting for everything to settle can leave you permanently stuck
    • How fixed-mindset decisions are often driven by fear
    • Why uncertainty is not a temporary interruption to life
    • How media, environment and previous experiences influence your thinking
    • Why impostor syndrome becomes more powerful during uncertain periods
    • The difference between feeling afraid and observing that you feel afraid
    • Why external validation cannot provide every answer
    • How small environmental changes can increase self-awareness
    • Why thoughts precede actions and decisions
    • How a thought diary can reveal recurring themes
    • Why self-awareness is essential for changing behaviour
    • How to make decisions without pretending that fear has disappeared
    • Why resilience begins with the individual

For founders, the Hamster Wheel Trap® connection is powerful. When the owner waits for certainty before hiring, delegating, investing or changing direction, every unresolved decision remains with the founder. The business becomes increasingly dependent on one person who is already overwhelmed.

You do not need perfect certainty to take the next sensible step. You need enough awareness to recognise what is influencing the decision—and the courage to act on what you can control.

    ARCHIVE CONTEXT

This episode was recorded in early 2022 and uses the pandemic as its principal example of uncertainty. Those references reflect the period, but the wider discussion about fear, decision paralysis, impostor syndrome and self-awareness remains evergreen.

The thought diary discussed in the episode is presented as a self-reflection exercise and is not a substitute for qualified support. • Why Great Employees Won’t Work for You | Amanda Abella

    Send us Fan Mail

Talented people are willing to work. The more important question is: why would they choose to work for your company?

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with author, entrepreneur and former recruiter Amanda Abella about recruitment, employee retention and the workplace changes exposed by the Great Resignation.

Amanda argues that people were not simply abandoning work. Many were rejecting toxic cultures, limited opportunities, inflexible working arrangements and employers whose stated values did not match their behaviour.

Peter and Amanda examine both sides of the employment relationship. Employees may want greater flexibility, but businesses still need dependable coverage and performance. Employers may struggle to find good people, but talented candidates have choices—and they will examine an organisation’s leadership, culture, mission and working environment before joining.

    You’ll discover:

    • Why the Great Resignation was about more than people quitting work
    • How the pandemic accelerated workplace changes that were already happening
    • Why talented employees want contribution, meaning and opportunity
    • How values misalignment contributes to employee turnover
    • Why a compelling vision makes recruitment easier
    • The difference between publishing company values and actually living them
    • Why good candidates examine the behaviour of the person at the top
    • How flexible and remote working changed the balance of power
    • Why forcing people back into an office can cost you valuable employees
    • How workplace design and culture affect performance
    • Why reactive recruitment places the company on the back foot
    • How training and development support employee retention
    • Why founder ego can prevent necessary organisational change
    • The question every employer must answer: why should a talented person work for you?

For founders, this episode exposes a classic Hamster Wheel Trap® problem. Many owners hire reactively as the company becomes busier, without first defining the mission, values, culture, roles or leadership structure. They then struggle to attract dependable people, remain involved in everything and conclude that nobody can perform to their standard.

Better recruitment begins before the vacancy appears. It begins by building a business that capable people genuinely want to join.

    ARCHIVE CONTEXT

  • How to Lead Through Uncertainty and Keep Your Best People | Dr Robin Rosenberg

    Send us Fan Mail

What do people need from their leaders when plans keep changing and nobody can promise certainty?

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with clinical psychologist Dr Robin Rosenberg, CEO and founder of Live in Their World, about chronic uncertainty, workplace stress, employee retention and the leadership behaviours that create stability during unpredictable times.

Robin explains why people can mobilise effectively during a short-term crisis but struggle when acute stress becomes chronic. When the finish line keeps moving, employees become exhausted, confidence falls and a change of job can begin to look like the only available escape.

Peter and Robin explore how leaders can respond without making promises they cannot keep. The answer is not pretending that circumstances will remain stable. It is giving people a dependable foundation of respect, communication, support and realistic expectations while retaining the ability to change direction.

    You’ll discover:

    • Why prolonged uncertainty is more destabilising than a known problem
    • The difference between acute and chronic stress
    • Why people cope better when they understand what is happening and how long it may last
    • How workplace disrespect transferred into remote meetings
    • Why employees may crave certainty more than entrepreneurs do
    • How burnout contributed to the Great Resignation
    • Why resignation can eventually become a new onboarding challenge
    • How respectful leadership improves retention and performance
    • Why leaders should make adaptability an explicit part of the culture
    • How to create stability for employees without promising a stable plan
    • Why quarterly, annual and product plans must be treated as adaptable
    • How modular thinking makes businesses more resilient
    • Why different teams may require different working arrangements
    • How hope and mental resilience help people navigate prolonged difficulty

For founders, the Hamster Wheel Trap® lesson is particularly important: resilience cannot depend entirely on the founder repeatedly rallying everyone through the next crisis. The organisation needs a culture, leadership team and communication structure capable of helping people navigate uncertainty without waiting for the founder to provide every answer.

    ARCHIVE CONTEXT

This conversation was recorded in December 2021 as the Omicron variant was emerging. References to COVID-19, the Great Resignation and preparations for 2022 reflect that particular period. The wider lessons about uncertainty, chronic stress, workplace respect, retention and adaptive leadership remain relevant.

  • Procrastination Is Not Laziness: Confidence, Overload and Better Work Habits | Mojo Obadina

    Send us Fan Mail

Procrastination is often treated as laziness or a lack of discipline.

But what if hesitation is being driven by low confidence, an overwhelming to-do list, constant comparison or simple exhaustion?

In this episode, Peter Boolkah speaks with author and lecturer Mojo Obadina about why people procrastinate and what business owners, managers and employees can do to create healthier and more productive working habits.

Mojo explains the distinction between self-esteem, self-confidence and self-efficacy—and why believing that you can take action is critical to overcoming procrastination.

Peter and Mojo also explore the management behaviours that can make hesitant employees even less confident, the effect of social-media comparison, the danger of comparing your beginning with somebody else’s years of experience and why remote working can create longer hours rather than greater freedom.

    You’ll discover:

    • Why procrastination is not always a discipline problem
    • How confidence can affect decision-making and action
    • Why shouting at a hesitant employee can make matters worse
    • The difference between self-esteem, self-confidence and self-efficacy
    • How personal values influence motivation
    • Why social comparison can damage confidence and focus
    • How an unrealistic to-do list creates avoidance
    • Why three meaningful priorities can be more effective than dozens of tasks
    • How the 80/20 principle can help you identify the work that matters
    • Why remote workers need deliberate boundaries and breaks
    • How timers, movement and rewards can support better working habits
    • Why you must sometimes act before you have every answer

    IMPORTANT HEALTH CONTEXT

This episode includes personal opinions and experiences concerning antidepressants. Mojo explicitly states that she is not medically qualified, and her decision not to take prescribed medication describes her individual experience—not general medical guidance.

Antidepressants can be an appropriate treatment for some people, particularly those experiencing moderate or severe depression. Anyone considering starting, changing or stopping prescribed medication should speak to a qualified doctor or pharmacist. Antidepressants should not be stopped suddenly without medical guidance.

    ABOUT PETER BOOLKAH

Peter Boolkah is a business coach, author and speaker who has spent more than 20 years helping business owners build stronger, more valuable businesses that do not depend on them for everything.

He is the creator of The Hamster Wheel Trap® and author of Your Business Sucks: Build a Business That Works Without Destroying Your Life.

Peter works with founders and leadership teams on the issues that ultimately determine whether a business creates freedom or becomes another job: leadership, founder dependency, people, profit, execution, scaling, exit readiness and enterprise value.

His approach is direct, practical and built around one simple question:
