  • EG Future Leaders: A night of hope, pride and maybe the odd little tear

In this episode of the EG Property Podcast, EG editor Samantha McClary takes a look back at EG’s Future Leaders event, which took place on 7 December and saw 8 amazing individuals from across the real estate sector get up on stage, with no notes, and deliver a Ted-style talk.

All eight talks were honest, delivered straight from the heart and underlined just how much talent exists in this industry and how, if we listen to people like Tanya Coen d’arcy from JLL, Robin Didier from Ellandi, Clare Grimes from Octopus Real Estate, Jenny Offord from Homes England, Zaman Sheikh from Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council, Deborah Green from Oxford Properties, Georgina Watt from Taylor Wessing and Alex Woolmore from Argent, the future of the sector is looking bright.

Reminiscing on the evening are Taylor Wessing’s international head of real estate Paul Lawrence, JLL’s head of UK project, cost and NZC design Aimee Baker, and head of HR at Savills, Noel McGonigle.

Listen in to this 50-minute podcast, to find out more about why these 10 minute talks mattered so much and just why the Future Leaders project is such a positive for the property industry.

  • Voice of the Region: Hampshire – Marine propulsion

The industrial market is booming in the super-connected county of Hampshire but with a coastal boundary and two national parks to contend with, land has never been in shorter supply, according to Hellier Langston director Andy Hellier.

Hellier Langston is the highest-placed regional agent in the Radius On Demand Rankings for Hampshire with 444,162 sq ft transacted so far this year across 37 deals. It operates from offices in Fareham, near Portsmouth, as well as Southampton.

Southampton, which is the UK’s second biggest container port, is linked via the M27 to Portsmouth, itself a major passenger port, and this motorway connectivity is rare along the south coast and makes it attractive to the logistics and shipping services sectors. Hellier says the office market is also in tentative recovery, although he believes the pandemic means the days of single-let office buildings in the county are over.

The biggest challenge, however, is land. In Portsmouth particularly, which is a densely populated island, there is no land available and Hellier hopes planning laws can be made more flexible to help remedy this.

  • Following the ”spectacular” demise of Softbank-backed tech giant Katerra, meet the four former employees who have regrouped to lead the roll out of London-based Modulous in the US

When US-based tech giant Katerra shut down operations in June, it sent a ricochet through the construction technology sector.

For more on how these four former Katerra executives plan to harness their pre-existing skills to lead this expansion and why being a team of four women was a happy coincidence based on talent and talent alone, tune in to this week's episode of Tech Talk Radio.
