Indecisiveness was palpable on Dalal Street on the first day of the December expiry series on Friday, with Sensex and Nifty ending flat near record high levels. Gains in auto and IT stocks were offset by declines in banking stocks.

The 30-pack index, which rallied nearly 900 points intraday, settled at its new closing high of 62,272.68, up 762.10 points or 1.24%. Meanwhile, its NSE counterpart, Nifty50, settled 216.85 points or 1.19% higher at 18,484.10. The index hit a new 52-week high of 18,529.70 earlier today.

In the Sensex pack, Bajaj Finance, Dr Reddy’s, SBI, Maruti, Kotak Bank, Sun Pharma and NTPC were the top gainers in Wednesday’s trading session, rising about 0.5-1.5%. ICICI Bank, HDFC, Axis Bank, M&M, Tata Steel and HDFC Bank also closed higher.

The 30-share Sensex ended 274 points higher at 61,419 while its broader peer Nifty 50 ended just below the 18,250 level.
