I greet you in Jesus’ precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 26th of August, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.  

We start in the First Book of John 2:16-17: 

“For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

Then we go to the Gospel of Matthew 6:24: “

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”  

Just a little before that, in verse 21, the Lord says: 

”For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

I remember, many years ago listening to a sermon by a Scottish preacher. He told the story of a man who was not interested in God, only building his own kingdom. He was a miller by trade. He had a mill with a big grindstone, right next to the river, with that big paddlewheel and night and day this grindstone would grind out the corn and make flour. The man got very old and started getting very sick. His family was concerned about him, but he wasn’t interested in anything else but making money. Eventually, he got so sick, he asked them to take his bed and put it right next to the grinding stone, and he was actually dying. The man was dying and yet he was still completely concerned about his flour mill and making money.

A minister came to see him one day and was trying to speak to him, saying, “You are going to die, and you are going to a lost eternity. You need to give your life to the Lord.” And the old Scottish miller said, “I can’t hear you, laddie. The mill is making so much noise.” He could not hear the message from the man who was offering him eternal life because he was making too much money. Obviously, straight after that, he died.

Do not waste valuable time on things that are passing away, but concentrate on things with eternal value and eternal life.
