  • The Price France Pays Three Times

France facing the structural cost of war
What Jérôme Denariez demonstrates goes beyond the single case of the Rafale: it is a shift in the very framework used to assess power. Counting stockpiles — aircraft, armored vehicles, munitions — is no longer enough to measure real military capability; what now matters is the capacity to turn that stock into a continuous flow, to produce, repair and replace over time, under strain. And this is precisely where France is exposed: a defense industry at the technological cutting edge, yet fragmented and undercapitalized at critical links, as the Europlasma and Forges de Tarbes cases starkly illustrate.

The “three payments” mechanism the author describes — at abandonment, at reconstruction, then at incompleteness — is not unique to the powder or munitions sector. The same dynamic is likely to recur elsewhere: electronic components, rare earths, space capabilities, industrial cybersecurity. Whenever a capability is declared strategic without a coherent economic model to back it, the bill does not disappear — it simply shifts in time, and grows heavier along the way.

The real question this article raises for the months ahead is therefore not only budgetary: it is whether France, and Europe more broadly, will be able to identify these weak links before the next crisis rather than after — while there is still a choice about where to invest, rather than discovering the dependency at the moment it costs the most.

  • Hormuz: Three Voices, One Diagnosis on European Autonomy

Hormuz: Three Voices, One Diagnosis on European Autonomy
A naval officer, a geopolitical economist, a historian of Putinism: in this episode, Éléonore and François revisit three independent readings of the Strait of Hormuz crisis, published without any coordination between April and July 2026. Three radically different methods — yet, taken together, a single diagnosis on Europe's strategic indecision. A synthesis by François de Vries.

  • Combat Cloud: Are the Dice Already Loaded Ahead of the July 17 Summit?

The End of Illusions and the Return to Reality
Beyond the carefully stage-managed official communication for the July 17 summit, it is clear that optimism is no longer warranted for anyone still sincerely advocating for the Franco-German couple as the engine of European defense. The planned end of FCAS, coupled with the structural drift of an MGCS program kept on life support through a minimal shareholding agreement, proves that the parity-based cooperation model is dead.

The irreversible shift in the budgetary balance of power to a rearmed Germany, combined with irreconcilable doctrinal and nuclear visions, has permanently shattered the illusion of a shared destiny.

Even worse, the invisible battle over the software architecture of the Combat Cloud proves that technological sovereignty cannot be shared, and that each partner is primarily focused on shielding its own industrial turf. As the world rapidly shifts into the era of algorithmic warfare and the massification of Defense Tech—where the agility of the Ukrainian ecosystem now serves as a compass—the bureaucratic sluggishness of the Paris-Berlin tandem appears completely anachronistic. Freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, much like air superiority over Europe, will not be secured through half-baked compromises or photo opportunities in Brühl. It is high time to trade diplomatic myths for uninhibited pragmatism, prioritizing sovereign national pathways and agile, variable-geometry coalitions. Admitting this reality is not turning one’s back on Europe; it is finally refusing to pretend to play a game where the dice are already loaded.

  • Combat Cloud:
