  • Eureka!- Carl Sagan and the Golden Record

In the fall of 1977, Carl Sagan and a team of collaborators imbued with a sense of great purpose, set out to create a time capsule of cosmic proportions, and send it into space aboard the Voyager spacecraft as humanity’s symbolic embrace of other civilisations. On it, they set out to explain our planet and our civilisation to another in 117 pictures, greetings in 54 different languages and even one from humpback whales. In it was a representative selection of the sounds of Earth, ranging from an avalanche to an elephant’s trumpet to a kiss, as well as nearly 90 minutes of some of the world’s greatest music.

This month, on Eureka, Umapagan Ampikaipakan tells the story of this Golden Record and just how it came to be.

  • ABeatC and Nicholas Chin

Usually, when someone say they’ve gone travelling, it’ll be a trip to a nearby country or maybe just London. But when the trip includes Beijing China, to the coast of England, it might raise a few eyebrows - All done on bicycles.

Lau Shoong Huey is better known as ABeatC. A true talent of beatboxing, he’s been winning national competitions for four years in a row and also got a slot as Vietnam’s Top 4 beatboxers. He and fellow beatboxer, Cody “Coex” Foo created BeatNation. Malaysia’s first prime foundation for beatboxing.

Nicholas Chin is a self taught photographer and videographer with his own production house, 2117 Productions. Both Lau and Nicholas were college mates in Taylor’s University. In 2014, after seeing all the bad news affecting Malaysia, they both decided to spread the word of the Malaysian lifestyle and beatboxing, by travelling through a budget world tour.

They both bought folding bicycles, took a few buses and trains to Beijing China before embarking to the UK via land! Cycling over 50km per day and staying over in cities for a few days, the duo took over 15 months to finish their trip in October 2015.

For the record, Lau and Nicholas scored 22!

Talent is an unquantifiable trait in the creative world. It varies so much from person to person and sometimes, some have talents with a surprising amount of range. Aaron Aw is one of those. A stand up comedian who’s an award winning performer and is also currently studying for a PhD.

Taking from his self written bio, Aaron started doing comedy from the day he was born, where he was slapped by a doctor for laughing instead of crying.

Aaron does a multitude of things including emcee work, voice acting, and being a research assistant at Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Aaron’s comedy is a blast of energy riddled with impersonations, random somersaults and puns.
