It all started with a casual joke between Melissa and her friend, Bella, about joining in the auditions for the first Asia’s Next Top Model premiere season. Speaking of strong, Melissa is also a qualified tennis coach! Starting at the age of 15, Melissa turned to tennis after trying to become a professional swimmer didn’t work out. After training by her parents everyday till midnight, Melissa managed to secure a spot in the state team after a year of playing. She went all over to represent the states of Perak and Selangor, with also entering the SUKMA games twice.

Today, you can still find Melissa at the tennis court, keeping tennis serve sharp. She’s a fresh graduate in Marketing Communications in 2015, has a strong passion for emcee and hosting work where she aims one day to be the face of an E! News or MTV show one day.

  • Karya - a social enterprise

Khairul Hizam Harun used to work for an NGO teaching art to underprivileged kids. As with most charitable efforts however, funding was never reliable. So he went in search of a better, more sustainable model - today he heads Karya, a social enterprise that funds art lessons for children in shelter homes, through private art classes, that people pay for. All the funds they make get ploughed back into the organisation. We speak to Khairul about this approach, and how well it’s been working since he started it up last year.

  • Andrew Netto

As like any other Monday; tonight on That Time Of Night, we’ve got another comedian in the studio. He’s the only Malaysian comic who prides himself on lowering the vulgarity of his jokes and strangely enough, according to the Malaysian Guiness Book Of Records, the first comedian to perform on a flight, Andrew Netto!

Born and raised in Petaling Jaya, Andrew grew with a father who was sharp and quick-witted for him to learn to the ropes of one-liners. But it is only in school where his funny bone was honed. A particular event was an annual dinner at his school. Andrew’s batch realised they didn’t had a performing item for the evening, so they just threw Andrew on stage for his well-known impersonation of his teachers. Left everyone in stitches of course!

His foray into stand up comedy was sparked by a family tragedy. A cousin’s bucket list included stand up comedy on it, Andrew soon got a DVD copy of Russell Peters and wanted to do it too. His hard work paid off remarkably when during Peter’s Notorious World Tour 2012, he met up with Andrew and asked him to open his set.

Currently, Andrew is still up and strong on stage, doing public and corporate gigs.

  • Blues Dancing

Blues dancing has been around as long as the music. With roots that combine elements of both African and European partnered dance, it’s slow, it’s often close, and it’s intense - in the 40s, people used to call ‘slow dragging’. In the studio today talking to us about the global Blues Dancing movement is Dave Madison. A resident of San Francisco in the US, he started Blues Dancing in 2001, and has been teaching Blues dancing since the beginning of the Bay Area Blues scene.

The man was hooked on performing and by 1989, with Jo Kukathas, Andrew Leci and Zahim Albakri, the Instant Cafe Theater was born. Growing 26 years strong, Jit is still in it with productions and acting roles. In 1993, he founded the DramaLab with Zahim. Their first production, Gold Rain & Hailstones is also Jit’s first written string of successful plays throughout his career. Received accolades from everywhere and won grants from the Japanese Foundation, British Council and the Australian Arts Council.
