For more than three decades now, the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia has been beset by the unsolved Colonial Parkway murders. It’s considered the state’s most notorious case of who-done-it -- a string of brutal killings of four young couples, romantically linked or not, between October 1986 and September 1989. No obvious motives were established; there were no signs of robbery or sexual assault. But one thing was common: all 8 victims were brutally murdered either by strangulation, stabbing or shooting. And the string of killings untwined like scary stories told in the dark, without clue who or when the killer would strike again.

You’ve got a Facebook friend request - or conversely, your friend request has been accepted - and the thrill of having a new virtual friend that may open beautiful possibilities is undeniable. Social media has become a refuge for people like Jenelle Potter who seeks for a respite from the dreariness of her own, real world. But social media has its fair share of malevolence - notably bashing, sharing of fake news, cyber-bullying, and even deadly threats. In a single click, one can be unfriended on Facebook, and as simple as it may seem, this can effortlessly shatter the perceived ideal virtual world of the rejected person. One may opt to move on; others get sucked up by a quicksand of devastation. Unfortunately, Jenelle Potter succumbed to the latter, and allowed her wrath to end in tragedy. Who would have thought that pressing the “unfriend” button could lead to murder and unimaginable havoc?

Imagine it - you’ve got a special package that arrived in the mail! It’s attractively wrapped, and seems to contain something valuable. Perhaps, an expensive bottle of perfume? Tickets to a Caribbean cruise? Or the latest gadget you’ve been saving up for? Instinctively, you become excited to unwrap the package, leaving no room for any suspicion or fear, as the surprise just fills you with joy. In almost all instances, such would be the scenario, right? However, five New York City residents had the opposite experience. Between 1982 and 1996, each of them received an unexpected, nicely wrapped package in the mail; but the surprise brought them shock, trauma and injuries, and one even met her untimely death, because what they opened turned out to be an explosive device. The attacks became known as the malevolent work of the “Zip Gun Bomber.”
