To her neighbors, Dorothea Puente seemed almost saint-like. She opened her home to shelter society’s outcasts: the homeless, the mentally-ill, alcoholics, drug addicts, and even frail, sickly old people. She was known to provide meals and medical care for her marginalized tenants, gave out backyard vegetables to her neighbors, and adopted stray cats. How could her neighbors not admire the kind woman who also contributed money for political campaigns and charitable endeavors? But Dorothia’s Sacramento, California community was rocked in 1988 when it was discovered that on the grounds of her property was a mass grave of elderly tenants she murdered. At the age of 60, Dorothea gained notoriety as the “Death House Landlady.”

The invitation turned out to be a bait for a kidnapping spree perpetrated by Ariel Castro, a self-confessed sex and pornography addict. He abducted and imprisoned three women in his home for a decade, and subjected them to constant physical  abuse, sexual assault, emotional battery, induced abortion and unwanted pregnancy. For Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, it was the nearest experience to living in hell, and the closest encounter with a devil on earth.

American writer and literary critic Anatole Broyard once opined, “In an age like ours, which is not given to letter-writing, we forget what an important part it used to play in people’s lives.” In the 1970s, the ability to instantly communicate through e-mails, texting, or social media was still decades away, so people employed the use of paper and pen, the mailman, and mailboxes to stay in touch. One of life’s simple joys was writing and receiving letters. Through letters, people built friendships, sustained relationships, and strengthened romance. But for the residents of one small town in Ohio, the fun of exchanging letters was turned to terror when many of them received anonymous, vitriolic, and threatening handwritten messages. These poison pen letters of the mid-1970s came to be known as the “Circleville Letters,” and for nearly two decades, they spread fear through the mail in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio.

But when the resort town became the spot of a quadruple homicide in 1981, it was abandoned, later becoming a rotted refuge for squatters and drifters. The glory days of the resort town are long gone, and the truth behind the deaths of four people is still lost, decades later.

In the U.S. state of New Mexico, one can find towns with unusual names such as Elephant Butte and Truth and Consequences. But few people know that in these towns there once lived a criminal with an equally unusual moniker - “The Toy-Box Killer.” He was an infamous American kidnapper, torturer, rapist, and suspected serial killer who executed his monstrous crimes right inside his trailer, known as a “toy-box”, and later referred to as “Satan’s Den.” It was only in March 1999 that David Parker Ray a.k.a. the “Toy-Box Killer” was exposed and arrested after his last victim succeeded in running away from his captor. Of the allegedly 60 people, mostly women, that he tortured and killed inside his soundproof trailer, only a few lived to share their harrowing experiences. Their stories from hell led to David Parker Ray’s conviction – though not for the crime of murder, surprisingly.

So a person, a relationship, a work atmosphere, a culture, or a social media platform can now be labeled as toxic. In fact, Oxford Dictionary declared ‘toxic’ as 2018’s “Word of the Year” for it reflected the ethos, mood, or preoccupations in 2018. But did you know that 23 years ago, American woman Gloria Ramirez from Riverside, California was nicknamed by the media as the “Toxic Woman?” She allegedly emitted noxious fumes from her body and blood that caused fainting spells and illnesses among 23 medical practitioners in a Riverside hospital’s emergency room. Eventually, the “Toxic Woman” died, and certain interesting conspiracy theories surround her death, considered a major medical mystery.
