This week, my guest is Andy Collins, of Forest Dogs,
Higham Hill Dog Training Club.
Andy is a force free trainer and has a very successful dog day boarding set up at his home. Andy also has a team of walkers who service dogs throughout the week (only 1-1). Andy also carries out 1-1 consultations on more difficult client/ dog relationships.
Andy is the national coordinator of bouvier welfare and rescue UK which aims to provide support advice and potentially new homes to the Bouvier des Flandres dog.
Andy has many years experience of working with a variety of dogs - and now has his own force free dog school based in east London.
Andy is guardian to Steffi an 8.5 year old bouvier who has helped develop Andy's understanding of dog behaviour immensely.
Thanks to his beloved family, who put up with him and his nonsense!

This week we are talking to Iuean Hudson of Pawstitive Life, in Somerset.
https://www.pawsitivelife.co.uk/
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100082318257434
Iuean introduces himself as follows
"I am a dedicated positive dog trainer from Somerset. My journey into the world of positive dog training began with the adoption of my rescue dog George who faced behavioural challenges and was deemed unsuitable for rehoming. Helping and understanding George, ignited a passion in me that led me to leave my military career to pursue dog training full-time.
Since then, I have devoted myself to understanding the science behind modern, positive training techniques, earning qualifications that reflect my commitment to ethical practices. I have spent the last few years researching, practicing and training dogs and their guardians, before opening Pawsitive Life in June - our positive only dog daycare and training hub designed to serve the local community. At Pawsitive Life, myself and the team focus on creating a nurturing, enriching environment where every dog is cared for in the most positive and ethical way possible.
With an ethos rooted in compassion for dogs and force free training backed by science, I believe that training should be a joyful experience for both dogs and their guardians and truly develop their bond and relationship, without fear.
I am dedicated to making Pawsitive Life daycare and training hub a transparent, force free, positive only dog hub within community, focusing on educating owners and empowering and developing his team in science backed positive training."
In this episode, I look at how to start building fluency in your dog's behaviour using the concepts of building duration, increasing distance and having your dog perform that behaviour you are teaching under increasing (but fair) levels of distraction.
This week, my guest is my dear friend, Tess Erngren. We talk about how to have conversations with people regarding their lives with their dogs in order to improve their dog's welfare through training.
We talk specifically about the difficulties we have when talking to others who don't align with our ethics.
Tess is a dog trainer and behaviourist who lives in Norway during the summer months and travels in southern Europe over the winter, presenting on dog training and behaviour topics.

Another Q and A.
Can all reactive dogs be "cured"?
What are "dominant" behaviours?
Do certain types of dogs/breeds find loose lead walking difficult?
How can I teach my dog to be more settled?

I had the great honour this week to talk to someone who has been pivotal in my journey from the dark side of dog training towards reward based, dog-friendly dog training.
As well as the three excellent books he has already published on living with and teaching your dog, his new book, Training for the Joy of Dogs -Fifty Lessons Learned is available now.
Paul, often referred to as the “original” Dog Whisperer, will be celebrating his 50 Year Anniversary as a professional dog trainer. He is one of the leading proponents of positive, force-free, nonviolent animal training. Paul was one of the first of 27 individuals in the world accredited by the prestigious Pet Professional Guild Accreditation Board as Professional Canine Trainer. In 2019, he was recognized as one of the 10 Top Dog Trainers in the United States by topdogtips.com.
Paul’s after-school violence prevention program Paws for Peace afforded hundreds of children and dogs the opportunity to build confidence and self-esteem while improving safety and the quality of their lives.

Just me this episode, folks. In this episode I illustrate (hopefully!) how the effects of aversive consequences can be perfectly illustrated in some of our online interactions on social media.

This week, I'm talking to Eileen Koval, a dog trainer in Las Vegas, on the topic of snake avoidance and how it can be applied to other areas of our lives with our dogs.
Eileen Koval, CDBC, CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA, MSc (in Operations Management) is a fully certified dog behaviour consultant with the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants (IAABC). She believes the foundation of a good cross-species relationship is understanding the needs and normal behaviour patterns of each dog as an individual, as he/she was bred to be. She enjoys helping humans and dogs communicate more effectively to create brilliant relationships with joy, purpose, and fulfilment for all species involved. She offers private consulting for serious dog behaviour issues, obedience/manners, and agility training. Eileen developed a unique online course to help pet parents and trainers develop reliable snake avoidance behaviour off-leash through positive reinforcement techniques. These techniques have been applied by trainers worldwide to teach dogs reliable avoidance of dangerous environmental hazards and off-leash property boundaries. She lives on a small ranch in Las Vegas, Nevada with her husband and their Nederlandse Kooikerhondjes.

I was asked by my colleague, Mary Torrano, how my practice of Stoicism has influenced my daily life with my own dog, my clients and their dogs. In this episode, I select a few Stoic principles and illustrate how they apply to our lives wit our dogs.
Don't worry! This is way more interesting than statistical analysis. This week's guest is with Iain Robertson (Rob), and Englishman In Norway! We had an awesome chat about a variety of topics including a potentially world changing project which he and others are spearheading.
Ron writes
"Originally from the UK but now living just south of Oslo in Norway. I have a background from the Telecoms industry where I have worked for many different companies ( Royal Navy, BT, Marconi, Telenor ) and held different positions. Three and half years ago I started working for myself as a Private Consultant offering management and project services.
At around the same time I started my education as a Dog Training instructor with Tess Erngren and the GoodDog Academy after finding I needed more insight and help with my dog Baloo, a field line Labrador Retriever. Fast forward to today I have recently qualified as a behaviour consultant where I help people on a one to one basis with their dogs behaviour. At the same time I run a weekly open training where I manage each session depending on the needs of the dogs and people attending.
Recently and on the back of doing a startup incubator program with a company called Antler this spring in Oslo I have taken my passion for dogs to a whole new level. We are going to build the world's largest database of dog training and behaviour. We want to improve information about dogs for everyone and show that positive reinforcement training does work. If this is something that you think is interesting and would like to help with please visit www.canisdata.com or alternatively you can send me an email to [email protected]. How shall we do this? by providing software to the trainer to set up their classes and manage one to one training. The dog owner/ guardian uses the APP/ Software to track their training progress. We are in the early stage of testing and always on the lookout for volunteers to help test so owners and trainers are both welcome.
The grand vision is to track the dog from birth to death and to cover Breeders, Fear Periods, Breed Specific Knowledge, Training and Behaviour, Nutrition, Health and Environmental but this is going to take a long time to achieve. This is why we concentrate on building where we see the greatest need. Come join our community."
