Article 1: The Rise of Small and Agile Businesses in the Post-Pandemic World

In the latest episode of Everything Is Up featuring host Tammera Hollerich and guest Carlos Llanes, Carlos shared his story of starting Spartan Carrier Group, a ground-floor logistics company. Carlos saw the opportunity to start an agile and responsive company that could quickly adapt to the post-pandemic environment where supply chain disruptions were common.

In the podcast, Carlos talked about the impact of shutting down governments, reducing lead times, and geopolitical issues that were taking place at the time. He saw three things happening - first, the displacement of drivers due to furloughs from large corporations. Second, the creation of new motor carriers and non-asset-based brokerages by those drivers. Finally, the rise of small and agile businesses like Spartan Carrier Group that could quickly adapt to the changing environment.

Here are three tips on how small and agile businesses like Spartan Carrier Group can succeed in the post-pandemic world:

    1. Focus on niches - Spartan Carrier Group focused on the automotive niche, which allowed them to have a specific understanding of the industry's needs and requirements. The focus helped them quickly adapt to the changes caused by the pandemic.

    2. Be agile and responsive - Small and agile businesses can quickly respond to disruptions in the supply chain and adapt accordingly. By being nimble, they can stay ahead of the competition and survive in the post-pandemic world.

    3. Hire the right people - small businesses heavily rely on their workforce to succeed. Hire individuals who are adaptable, have a diverse skill set, and are passionate about their work. These individuals can help grow the business and adapt to changing market conditions.

With Carlos's insights on starting a small business, and Tammera's guidance throughout the podcast, this episode is a must-listen for those interested in entrepreneurship and logistics.

As Carlos said, "running a business is about navigating changes and being able to pivot in a myriad of different directions." Tune in to Everything Is Up and learn from Carlos's experiences about starting and running a business in the post-pandemic world.

Article 2: How to Maneuver in the Post-Pandemic World: Lessons from Spartan Carrier Group

In a recent episode of Everything Is Up featuring host Tammera Hollerich and guest Carlos Llanes, Carlos provided insights into starting Spartan Carrier Group - a logistics company that can adapt quickly to changes caused by the pandemic. Carlos's story is inspiring, and it's a must-listen for anyone interested in entrepreneurship.

In the podcast, Carlos shared his thoughts on the impact of the pandemic on businesses, particularly the logistics industry. He understood that the pandemic would lead to the displacement of drivers and that large corporations would furlough a significant percentage of their capacity. If these drivers did not find work, it would severely damage the economy and hurt the supply chain. Carlos decided to start his own company that could adapt to the changing environment.

Here are three tips on how to maneuver in the post-pandemic world, inspired by Carlos's journey:

    1. Look for opportunities in change - Carlos saw an opportunity in the changes caused by the pandemic. He believed that by starting a small and agile logistics company, he could take advantage of the situation and help the economy.

    2. Focus on customer needs - Carlos understood that every customer has different needs, and it's essential to understand those needs to succeed in the logistics industry. By focusing on customer needs, Spartan Carrier Group has built a reputation for providing high-quality services.

    3. Build a supportive community - Starting a small business can be challenging, and having a supportive community can help you succeed. Carlos built a community of drivers, staff, and customers who support Spartan Carrier Group's mission.

In the podcast, Carlos stated, "you have to be in tune with how to navigate changes and adapt to the changes that are taking place." Tune in to Everything Is Up

    Introduction:

Welcome back to another episode of "Everything Is Up," where we bring you real-life success stories from inspiring individuals. In this episode, we sit down with Austin and Sophia, co-owners of the food company Realsy, as they share their journey in building their business and the challenges they faced along the way. Join us as we delve into their experiences, offer practical advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, and explore the data-driven insights that led to their success.

Taking Action and Addressing a Need:

Austin and Sophia, both TCU graduates, met in an entrepreneurship class and quickly became friends while working on a project together. Their passion for health and nutrition was fueled by personal experiences - Sophia's brother's illness inspired her interest, while Austin's family background in the restaurant industry shaped his love for culinary arts.

Recognizing a lack of healthy and delicious options near their college campus, they took action and started a food truck business called Roland and Boland. Their menu, featuring Acai Bowls, smoothies, and Avocado Toast, quickly gained popularity among TCU students, who would line up for their food.

    Pivoting During the Pandemic:

Like many businesses, Realsy faced significant challenges when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. With their customer base of college students leaving campus, they had to find a new way to reach their audience. Locked out of their storefronts and unable to access ingredients, they made a bold decision to pivot to consumer packaged goods (CPG).

Within 60 days, they launched single-serve frozen smoothie pouches, shipped them across the country, and allowed customers to customize their orders on their website. This move not only allowed them to adapt to the changing market but also took advantage of the rise in online food delivery platforms during the pandemic.

    Data-Driven Insights and Rebranding:

As they navigated the world of CPG, Austin and Sophia realized the challenges that came with frozen logistics and manufacturing. They learned from their early traction with Nut Butterfilled Dates, which prompted them to rebrand and make changes to their packaging, supply chain, manufacturing, and recipes.

Their data-driven approach helped them identify what resonated with their customers and refine their products accordingly. By analyzing consumer preferences and market trends, they were able to create a stronger brand identity for Realsy.

    Practical Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs:

Throughout their journey, Austin and Sophia learned valuable lessons that they now share with aspiring entrepreneurs. They emphasize the importance of taking action, addressing a need, and not being afraid to fail. Writing a business plan is essential, but it should not be the sole focus. Instead, they believe in the power of imperfect action and failing forward.

They also encourage college students to take risks and try different things without the fear of failure. Their own experience of starting a food truck business while still in college demonstrates the potential for success when one is willing to step outside their comfort zone.

    Conclusion:

As we wrap up this episode of "Everything Is Up," we are inspired by the journey of Austin and Sophia and their determination to overcome challenges. From starting a food truck business to pivoting to consumer packaged goods during the pandemic, their story is a testament to the power of taking action and adapting to changing circumstances.

If you're interested in learning more about Realsy, you can find them on Instagram and TikTok @EatRealsy. Their website, Eatrealsy.com, offers their products for purchase, and you can also use the store locator to find their products in local retailers.

They emphasize the significance of listening over speaking, understanding over seeking to be understood, and enlisting over telling. They underscore the detrimental effects of such exchanges and assert that effective leadership necessitates intelligent and empathetic communication.

Additionally, Tammera and Rose tap into the concept of a hybrid work environment, where remote work is embraced, and on-site work is reserved for specific purposes. They mention that many young people have realized during the pandemic that working remotely can enhance their quality of life compared to daily commutes.

The perception of reality becomes your reality, making it essential to always be aware of how you are perceived and consistently work towards enhancing that perception.

Furthermore, Tammera and Randi highlight the importance of innovation and avoiding stagnation as a company. They explain that change is inevitable and approach it with a scientific mindset of trial and error. Failure is not viewed negatively but rather as a step closer to the next breakthrough or desired outcome. This mindset is also applicable to the go-to-market strategy, where the focus lies on improving the customer experience, product, and the company's perspective.

    QUOTES

    • “I think there's a lot of variables, but when there is a health system acquiring a standalone, especially in a rural area, it can be held propped up because there's more financial backing, so more resources, so they can better serve that community, whether it's different programs they can offer because they have them at the large facilities, but they can create something mobile in that rural community or smaller setting.” - Randi Deckard
    • “One of the things if you're not in the healthcare industry that people don't realize is that hospitals have very lean margins. And when I say lean, I'm like just a couple percent. So in order for them to operate and serve their patients and the communities at large, it does require very tight finances so they can serve year after year.” - Randi Deckard
    • “I look at everyone as my customer, like the ecosystem, it's my colleagues, so the internal and external. And I think that's what makes me really good at my job is number one, I truly understand and I've walked with the customers that are paying and bring that back and cross-functionally collaborate with my internal customers so we can always deliver the best service and experience.” - Randi Deckard
    • “My mother would say you really shouldn't care what other people think about you. But if you don't, And if you're not thinking about how they think about the business and if you're the face of that brand or you are, you do have to think about all of these things because it does matter. It does the perception. Your perception of reality is your reality.” - Tammera Hollerich
    • “If you're using AI as an ally in your job, knowing the pieces of you that it could replace, if you're using it to your advantage, you won't have to be replaced. It'll just make you better all the way.” - Tammera Hollerich

They explain that profit can take different forms, including financial profit, time profit, and reputational profit. Tammera and Brook also discuss how entrepreneurs should consider their personal goals and values when determining what they want from their business, as it is not always solely about cash.

Additionally, Tammera and Brook discuss the significance of hiring experts and delegating tasks to small business owners. They highlight that small business owners often find themselves overwhelmed with handling every aspect of their business, leaving little time for personal life. While small business owners may possess the intelligence to learn and manage all the financial and operational tasks, it is not an efficient use of their time. Instead, they recommend that small business owners focus on their areas of expertise and delegate other tasks to professionals so they can free up time for themselves and avoid making costly mistakes.

"When you can make decisions with data and with somebody helping you that has the expertise, that has that knowledge that you're talking about, that academic background, You only make the decision once, right?" - Brook Lively

“A team player that knows how to deal with difficult people, maybe you should be in sales. It starts to decompose all the things you've done and then starts to build that up into skills and compares it to available jobs out there, which is also broken down into the skills.” - Dr. Peter Photos
