Ralph and I circle back for part 4 of our unofficial 4 part series on Portland's music scene.
We talk about the city's deep history of underground bands that had a far-reaching influence. We talk about a few of our favorite such as Greg Sage and the Wipers, Poison Idea, Deep Moon as well as some more contemporary bands.
Intro: "Plastic Bomb" -Poison Idea
Outro: "Doom Town" - The Wipers
This is round 3 of our unofficial "Unholy Portland" miniseries. This week, we welcome Davey Ferchow of Dry Wedding, another great Portland band mining the post-punk shadows of one of the Northwest's most fertile music cities.
Intro: "All the Dark Things" - Mike Hill
Outro: "Frayed Rope" - Dry Wedding
This week, Casey Logan of Portland's Murderbait joins us. If you missed last week's episode, go back and listen to it; Ralph and I hold Murderbait in the highest regard.
Casey and I go way back to the inspiration for the band, philosophies on creativity and also talk about Shadowlands, another fine participant in Portland's underground music scene.
Intro: "All the Dark Things" - Mike Hill
Outro: "Lost" - Murderbait
It seems like a lifetime has passed since Ralph and I did an episode together. It was great to catch up and talk about a great band that needs more hype.
A while back, Ralph turned me on to Murderbait from Portland. At the time, their EP “When the Sun Goes Down, It Goes Down Forever” was out. You have to love that title. Immediately, I was drawn into their web or darkness and intensity, bringing to mind some of my favorite bands such as Fields of the Nephilim, Bauhaus but with a distinctly original vibe.
Murderbait have a brand new LP out called “Nostalgia Like Cancer” (yet again another great title).
Intro: "All the Dark Things" - Mike Hill
Outro: "Lost" - Murderbait
Trevor Shelley-DeBrauw of Pelican / Rlyr returns to the podcast. For serious, old school listeners you may remember the episode we recorded way back when we were on tour in Europe together. I always look forward to these meetings; some of my favorite tour memories involve Trevor and the men of Pelican and Isis.
Intro: "Everything Went Black" - Mike Hill
Outro: "Specks of Light" - Pelican
As some of you know, Tombs wrapped up a short run of dates with Cloak and Restless Spirit. It was great to be out on the road again; also shout out to those of you that I met in person!
This week, Paul Aloisio, the guitarist and vocalist from Restless Spirit joins us to talk about the formation of the band, their current album “Blood of the Old Gods” as well as his time writing about horror movies.
Intro: "All the Dark Things" - Mike Hill
Outro: "Haunted" - Restless Spirit
I’m back from being on the road for a few days. I actually got to meet some of you, which was really cool. It’s been a while since we put one of these out, so here we go.
Intro: “All the Dark Things” – Composed and recorded by Mike Hill
Outro: “The Last Thing” – Lebanon Hanover
It’s another Heavy Metal Massacre coming at you this week. Me and J Bennet, long time friend / musician / rock scribe, joins us to talk about the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and some of our favorite bands that we tagged with this moniker.
Intro: “Everything Went Black” – Composed and recorded by Mike Hill
Outro: “Alley Cat Blues” – Star Fighters
John Lamacchia joins us this week to talk about “Thunderheads” his brand new record set to release on May 20 on Aqualamb Records. For decades, John led Brooklyn-based progressive metallic hardcore band Candiria, been active with other projects such as Spylacopa as well as DJ’ing at various NYC night spots.
Thunderheads is a deeply personal record, produced during the pandemic that dealt with, as Lamacchia puts it, “ the isolation and the feeling that the world was falling apart,” however the record has a markedly uplifting quality.
Intro: “Everything Went Black” – Composed and recorded by Mike Hill
Outro: “Bled Out” - LaMacchia
Ralph and I are back to talk about X, the seminal LA punk band.
Intro: "River of Night" - composed and recorded by Mike Hill
Outro: "White Girl" - X
