Michael McLaren is joined by Felicity Lewis, the national explainer editor for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, about her co-written article in the SMH this week entitled ““Where did Santa come from? Was pudding really served with meat? Everything you wanted to know about Christmas”.
Ms Lewis explains that the whole phenomenon of Christmas …. the date, why we decorate trees, belief that a fat chap in a red suit and white beard comes down chimneys, eating turkey and the giving of presents … has now become a global phenomenon rather than a Christian one.
With so many religions and cultures celebrating Christmas in very different ways, it’s hard to know what Christmas really stands for.
