With top-notch production design, fantastic performances, and a killer score to boot, this movie continues to be a kooky gem that super duper holds up. Quiet in tone and small in scope, Jules of Light and Dark is an excellent example of fresh, unconventional storytelling. Fueled by gorgeous cinematography, a delicate score, and stellar performances from the two leads, this film proves that subtlety and nuance can be enthralling and affecting.

Documenting a niche scene of gorgeous dancers and the African-American women who loved them, Leilah Weinraub’s charming yet poignant Shakedown captures the spirit and vitality of a marginalized group carving out a much-needed space for themselves in a world that seeks to oppress them.

The 2018 TWIST Film Festival ends on Sunday but that doesn’t mean there’s any shortage of great films to see before then. Want some examples? Well, press play to hear about some of our picks from the second week of the festival.

If you go to see When the Beat Drops, the dance documentary about the bucking scene in Atlanta, be sure to tighten your shoelaces because these dancers are going to knock your socks off. Energizing, lively, and just plain fun this movie is sure to sparkle and wow on the big screen.

Set in the year of its title, and filmed in gorgeous black and white, 1985 is a coming out story that gets it right. Sweet without being saccharine, emotive without being overdramatic, this film manages to tell its story between the lines and is richer for it.
