Exciting and New

Jason, Andy and Dana welcome another Dan on the podcast as we discuss what we are watching.  Stay tuned for Revenge of the Nerds this Wednesday.

Jason, Andy and Dana will discuss a 1986 movie weekly, breaking down all the nonsense there within. The 3 hosts all work together and everyone else around them was getting really annoyed at all the movie talk, so they decided to annoy the world in podcast form.

Check out previous seasons to hear them discuss 1982, 1983, 1984 & 1985 movies, as well as a full season of Love Boat episodes (if that is your thing). Plus one-off specials and a weekly mini "what are we watching" podcast.

This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mike back on the podcast as we discuss the 1984 punk-infused sci-fi, dark comedy Repo Man.   Emilio Estevez stars in his first lead movie as a street punk who is recruited by Harry Dean Stanton into the glamourous world of repossessing cars.  This movie is all over the map.  Aliens are involved.  Street gangs are involved.  People-melting car trucks are involved.  The Circle Jerks are involved.  In the end, when it came time to give the scores, there might never have been a wider range of scores given on this podcast.  Some of us would say watch the movie before listening to the podcast.  Some would say skip the movie but listen to the podcast.  What we can all agree on is that you should listen to the podcast.  Enjoy.

This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Paul back as we discuss the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational 1984 movie The Muppets Take Manhattan.  Kermit, Fozzie, Piggy and the gang take their talents to the City that Never Sleeps as they try to make it there, and by extention, make it everywhere.   All of us Old-heads grew up with Sesame Street and the Muppet Show, so we take a nostalgic romp through the nonsense that insues when things don't go exactly as planned when the gang makes it to NYC.  So, it's time to put on makeup.  It's time to dress up right.  It's time to raise the curtain on the podcast show tonight.  Enjoy.

This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana discuss the 1984 Alfred Hitch....no, wait, the Brian DePalma noir thriller Body Double.  Fresh off of Scarface, DePalma used all his new clout and decided he wanted to rip off Alfred Hitchcock, but make it more sexy (?).  Bill Maher apparently wasn't avalible, so they got some dude who looked just like him, to perv around a fresh faced Melanie Griffith.  There is not a lot to like about this movie.  They took all the things we liked about Rear Window and Vertigo and sleazed them up.  But not sexy sleaze.  Just gross.   One high point is the "Relax" video from Frankie Goes to Hollywood that is filmed durning the middle of this movie.  Weird.  Hate watch the movie then love listen to the podcast.  Enjoy.

This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome first-timer Dan to the show as they discuss the 1984 rom-com Splash.  Opie Cunningham directs Tom Hanks as the lovable loser who unknowingly falls in love with a mermaid.  Johnny Candy stars as his perverted brother, and is the real star of this movie and we miss him every day.  Daryl Hannah stars as the mermaid who gains legs when she is on land (this is how she fooled Tom Hanks in case you thought he was just ignoring her gigantic fin), and Eugene Levy, who is really having a bad week, tags along as the mermaid hunter.  Was that his job?  Cryptozoologist?  Deep Sea diver?  Moron Twin wrangler?  Who knows, it hardly matters?   We had a great time discussing this with Dan and can’t wait for him to come back on the show soon.  Enjoy the podcast.

This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana are guestless as they discuss the 1984 cult classic (why?) sci-fi comedy (?) The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.  Peter Weller stars as the neurosurgeon, rock star, racecar driving hero (honestly, did the writer’s room just sit around and think up all the cool jobs and give them all to the same guy?).  Was there any logical reason he had to have all these jobs?  He falls in love with his, get this, dead wife's long-lost identical twin sister.  Why?  Never does this pay off in the movie.  Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Goldblum, Clancy Brown and John Lithgow are all along for the ride in a movie that was obviously set up to be a franchise when they announced that Buckaroo would be back to fight the World Crime League.  But alas, this box office bomb yielded no sequel.  Now we'll never know what that league is up to.  This might be one of those movies you have to see to believe, but the podcast is a must-listen.  Enjoy!
