Have you been watching the Olympics too?
Weed has been on the list of banned substances for athletes in the Olympics decided by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This week Dr. Jonny Lisano, PhD Candidate Liz Thompson (@trainwith.maryjane) and I talk through the three criteria WADA uses to determine banned substances in international sport competitions and why they put weed on the list. We also talk about what we need to do as cannabis and sport & exercise researchers & educators before the LA2028 Olympics.

**Friendly reminder/disclaimer** I am not suggesting everyone use cannabis with exercise. Cannabis is definitely not for everyone. But if you're curious about your own use, understanding more about why people use cannabis with exercise, or want to learn about the latest research in the field, you're in the right place. Make good choices out there.
Hello and welcome back to exploring cannabis and exercise! The podcast where the anecdotes meet the data. This week I am so excited to share my conversation with Dr. Laura Stewart - professor in the department of Kinesiology, Nutrition, & Dietetics at University of Northern Colorado. I met Laura at the ACSM Rocky Mountain meeting in Spring of 2021 where we gave two out of the three talks that day about cannabis and exercise and saw her again at the Cannabis Research Conference last summer in Denver.
If you go back to Episode 4 with Jonny Lisano, you’ll hear a little more about other cannabis and exercise research she’s been up to because Jonny was one of her graduate students! Her lab has since done more research on CBD and exercise, for example this study published in 2023 and this article from 2024. One of the big things we talk about in this episode is the difference between research doses of CBD vs. commercially available doses of CBD. As you’ll hear in this episode, Dr. Stewart is smart, accomplished, cool and just as excited about sharing cannabis and exercise research with the public as I am.
As always, hope you enjoy this episode and make good choices out there.

Hello and welcome back to exploring cannabis and exercise! The podcast where the anecdotes meet the data.
This week I’m happy to share my conversation with Jay from @liftinglifted on Instagram. We connected on Instagram because he makes great shirts for fit stoners to wear to the gym.
In this episode we talk about his experiences going from being a Marine to learning about cannabis and exercise and using his creativity to create Lifting Lifted. We also talk about what the weed scene is like in Texas which was WILD to learn about.
If you’re hearing this before Wednesday April 3rd, 2024 and want to help fund cannabis research, you can donate to the Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research (HIIMR) on The Day of Giving.
I’m gearing up to launch a few cannabis and exercise studies and am slowly building a team of students to help me including my newest graduate student who just got accepted to our masters program at Cal Poly Humboldt Jorge! So your donations will help us turn our ideas into reality!
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this episode and make good choices out there!

Today I’m excited to share my conversation with Dr. Hilary Marusak who is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine in Detroit Michigan.
We connected a few years ago after her research team published a review paper on the effects of exercise on the endocannabinoid system.
In this episode we talk about her research related to cannabis and the endocannabinoid system in stress and brain development, the hard parts about doing cannabis-based research, and as always so many ideas for future research. You’ll also hear some great midwestern accents.

Hello and welcome back to exploring cannabis and exercise! The podcast where the anecdotes meet the data.
Today I have a fan favorite guest Dupree Stewart back on to talk about why he decided to cut back on cannabis to help with his MMA training. If you go back to the 5th episode of the podcast, Dupree talked about how he used cannabis to help manage pain, to eat, and to recover with his training. Then, I ran into Dupree at Costco a few months ago and he said that he stopped smoking and went pro in MMA. So, obviously, I had to have him back on the show to talk about that experience.
One of the big take aways I got from this conversation is the power of having other tools in the toolbox. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, cannabis is just one tool in the toolbox of health and sometimes you need different tools.
So this is a great listen if you’re considering taking a break from cannabis with exercise and interested in learning to use some other tools in the toolbox.

As always, hope you enjoy and make good choices out there.

Hello and welcome back to exploring cannabis and exercise! The podcast where the anecdotes meet the data.
This week I am so excited to share my conversation with my colleague Dr. Ronnie Swartz, who is a professor of Social Work at Cal Poly Humboldt. Ronnie and I met through HIIMR and have worked on cannabis-related studies, grants, and public health education together.
Because we come from different disciplines, we have different language and windows into the world of cannabis. So in this episode you’ll have the opportunity to learn about concepts like opioid-sparing effects and drug-set-and-setting.
And like all other episodes of this podcast, we have so many more ideas for research moving forward.
As always, hope you enjoy and make good choices out there.

Welcome back to exploring cannabis and exercise, the podcast where the anecdotes meet the data. When I first started getting into cannabis & exercise research in 2017, there really wasn’t that much out there in research, but there were instagram accounts like our guest’s @Bells_Bongs _Buds and hashtags like #fitstoner or #420fitness or #cannathlete.
I am so happy to share this conversation with Johnny from Bells, Bongs, & Buds.
We cover a lot of ground from spartan races to lifting weights, the process of finding the right terpene profile of cannabis to pair with exercise, our shared love for working out to Korn, and getting greencarded. :)
In the introduction, I also go into more detail on terpenes, the status of cannabinoid profiles in cannabis & exercise research, and how one might go about finding the right strain to pair with exercise. Highly recommend the Tetragram App to help you track how different cannabis strains impact you (and you can go back to my episode with founder Otha in November 2023 to learn more).
Enjoy and make good choices out there.

Hello and welcome back to exploring cannabis and exercise! The podcast where the anecdotes meet the data. And happy new year!
So for my first episode of the year, I thought we’d start the new year with a new cannabis researcher at University of Colorado - Devon Rapken. I met Devon at the Cannabis Research Conference in Denver last summer and we have stayed in touch ever since. In this conversation, we talk about our interest in the brain, cannabis and body awareness, increasing diversity in research, and getting better at playing the piano.
Hope you enjoy and make good choices out there.
note: I'll be releasing episodes every other week this spring and will be ramping up episodes about the Olympics and cannabis this summer. Email me [email protected] or DM me on Instagram any questions you'd like answered for my Olympics episodes.

Hello and Welcome back to Exploring Cannabis and Exercise. The podcast where the anecdotes meet the data.
This holiday season some of us will be consuming cannabis with our families while some of us will still be tiptoeing in conversations with family members about weed. So I thought this would actually be a good episode to drop this time of year that I recorded with my friend Anthony Monaco. I met Anthony when I was living in Indiana, but we actually grew up in neighboring towns in the chicago suburbs. We talk about his experience of being a leader in a straight-edge organization in high school called “Snowball”, having the talk with our parents about weed at Dave Matthews Band concerts, the luck and privilege we had & have in growing up how and where we did, and the experience of being a cannabis consumer in Indiana vs. Colorado, where he lives now.
So if you need a break from your family or if you’re not around family this year, I hope this podcast keeps you company. Hope you enjoy and make good choices out there.

This week I’m excited to share a conversation between me and my cousin, Haley, who helped me get this podcast off the ground. This will be a little different from all the other episodes because Haley interviews me! So, you’ll get to learn all about my academic journey and thoughts on cannabis or as Haley says in the episode: why you should trust what I’m saying - that I’m not just some stoner in the woods. 😛
