Hello and welcome back to exploring cannabis and exercise! The podcast where the anecdotes meet the data. And happy new year!
So for my first episode of the year, I thought we’d start the new year with a new cannabis researcher at University of Colorado - Devon Rapken. I met Devon at the Cannabis Research Conference in Denver last summer and we have stayed in touch ever since. In this conversation, we talk about our interest in the brain, cannabis and body awareness, increasing diversity in research, and getting better at playing the piano.
Hope you enjoy and make good choices out there.
note: I'll be releasing episodes every other week this spring and will be ramping up episodes about the Olympics and cannabis this summer. Email me [email protected] or DM me on Instagram any questions you'd like answered for my Olympics episodes.

**Friendly reminder/disclaimer** I am not suggesting everyone use cannabis with exercise. Cannabis is definitely not for everyone. But if you're curious about your own use, understanding more about why people use cannabis with exercise, or want to learn about the latest research in the field, you're in the right place. Make good choices out there.
Hello and Welcome back to Exploring Cannabis and Exercise. The podcast where the anecdotes meet the data.
This holiday season some of us will be consuming cannabis with our families while some of us will still be tiptoeing in conversations with family members about weed. So I thought this would actually be a good episode to drop this time of year that I recorded with my friend Anthony Monaco. I met Anthony when I was living in Indiana, but we actually grew up in neighboring towns in the chicago suburbs. We talk about his experience of being a leader in a straight-edge organization in high school called “Snowball”, having the talk with our parents about weed at Dave Matthews Band concerts, the luck and privilege we had & have in growing up how and where we did, and the experience of being a cannabis consumer in Indiana vs. Colorado, where he lives now.
So if you need a break from your family or if you’re not around family this year, I hope this podcast keeps you company. Hope you enjoy and make good choices out there.

This week I’m excited to share a conversation between me and my cousin, Haley, who helped me get this podcast off the ground. This will be a little different from all the other episodes because Haley interviews me! So, you’ll get to learn all about my academic journey and thoughts on cannabis or as Haley says in the episode: why you should trust what I’m saying - that I’m not just some stoner in the woods. 😛

Hello and welcome back to exploring cannabis and exercise! The podcast where the anecdotes meet the data. This week I’m talking with Dr. J. Derek Kingsley, professor at Kent State University in Ohio. We recorded this right after Ohioans voted to approve recreational cannabis in the state! We talk about his experience of being a pain researcher to being a chronic pain patient himself after a gnarly injury and using medical cannabis to manage his pain.
We also talk about a study he published last year about how people use cannabis to aid in recovery, our dream research ideas, and the current research he's up to now.

This week I’m talking with Tony Fur - the co-founder and CEO of OffField. It’s a company that makes cannabis drinks and edibles for people to enjoy with exercise. I love their catch phrase “movement made happy” - which is just the perfect encapsulation of what we’ve found in the research when we ask people why they combine weed with exercise - to help them enjoy the exercise experience.
In this episode Tony talks about his own experience of pairing cannabis with exercise to help him from getting off the ground with back pain to running his first marathon.
Hope you enjoy and Make good choices out there!

This week PhD candidate Kirsten Thornhill is back to share her journey from translating research for cannabis companies and working with athletes to now conducting her own research on cannabis use in athletes. We also have a spicy little convo about whether weed should be banned in college and olympic sport.

Today I talk to Otha Smith III from the Tetragram App about his own journey with cannabis and to learn more about his app. With the crazy number of options of cannabis products available on the market today, it's hard to know where to start and can sometimes take a while to figure out which products actually work for you. I am looking forward to collecting more data using the app myself and to use Tetragram in research!

This week I’m talking to my friend and colleague Dr. Dominic Corva who is the Director of the new Cannabis Studies degree at Cal Poly Humboldt. His professional expertise is in geography and drug policy, so we cover a ton interesting topics today including the role of surfers in globalizing (or smuggling) weed across the world and the policies that restricted funding research on the benefits of cannabis. He also talks more about the cannabis studies undergraduate program now in its first semester at Cal Poly Humboldt and an interdisciplinary grant he's working on with a great team investigating the legacy genetics of cannabis and the stories of the people behind the weed in California.
...and we even talk about smoking joints and playing ping pong.

If you've ever wondered what it's like for two kinesiology/exercise science professors to talk about cannabis and exercise, this episode is for you!
Dr. Matt Schubert is a tenured professor at CSU - San Marcos and he and I have been collaborating as researchers and creators of the Sport, Physical Activity, Cannabis & Exercise (SPACE) group open to all researchers studying cannabis and exercise. (Email me if you'd like to be added to our group!)
In this episode, Dr. Schubert talks about his background in caffeine research and then we talk about all kinds of current research & potential areas of research about cannabis & exercise.

This week I am so excited to highlight PhD candidate Kirsten Thornhill who is doing her dissertation on cannabis and exercise. She will talk about the study she is conducting and why it is important. You can participate in this study if you exercise at least 150 min/week, have used cannabis at least 1x in the last 6 months, and are in the United States. Click here if you qualify and want to participate in the study. It is totally anonymous.
