Lechuzas have quite the reputation in Mexican folklore. People tell all kinds of stories about them being the animal form of witches, or of them being familiars to witches. Some even think of them as Aliens (?!). As a creature with such an esoteric background, we decided to do an episode about them :)
Join us as we nerd out for a while and give you real biological facts about Lechuzas (AKA Barn Owls) in our much praised Academic Segment!
We're also very happy to say that Micah from The Great American Urban Legend Podcast has joined us for our Folklore Factoids Segment! We do a mini interview with him about his podcast, and then we dive right into the creepy things people talk about concerning these animals. We also get to swap stories about our own possible encounters with Lechuzas.
Finally, Chuy has once again created a jam to go along with the episode. This one will top the charts for sure!
We decided to watch the recently released Netflix series Haunted: Latin America. For this show, five different families were asked to share their experiences with alleged paranormal entities. We get stories about a haunted house, a possessed doll, a group of guardian angels, a homing ghost, and even the devil himself ...
We're doing things a bit differently for this one because we have not only one, but two Critique Segments! Listen in as we go over the main points/events of each story and to find out what we rate this series as whole (hint, we're not huge fans of it :P)
For our Academic Segment, we decided to talk about some of the equipment that a team of paranormal researchers from the San Angelo, Texas, area uses during their investigations! Chuy is totally thinking of buying some of these things for his own purposes ...
Emma is visiting the Italian countryside family home of her fiance Francesco and meeting her mother-in-law for the first time. As soon as they get there, her daughter Sofia starts to see and experience weird things. On top of that, it would appear as though Francesco's family might be hiding a dark secret that could put her and Sofia in danger ...
As usual, we'll each give our two cents on the movie (and our rating) in our Critique Segment.
For our much praised Academic Segment, we'll be talking about a (possible) real case of hardcore Mexican Binding Witchcraft (Amarre), in which a woman named Mireya Flores went all out in her attempt to get a man to love her unconditionally (and give her all his money while she was at it). Chuy went an extra mile in making this one extra creepy :)
Last but not least, we discuss whether or not the main villain of this movie deserves to be called as such in our Know Thine Enemy Segment.
Alice is an up and coming Adult Cam Girl who wishes more than anything to be the top one in her server. Suddenly, she finds out that someone (or something) has taken her identity and has replaced her in the chat room. Now it's up to her to find out just exactly WTF is going on ...
Spoilers: We weren't big fans of this (Award Winning?!) movie :(
Join us as we go over the nonsensical plot, lack of action, and disappointing resolution to this movie in our Critique Segment. Then, we talk about the case of famous singer/actress Ariana Grande and her online Doppelganger, Paige Niemann in our much loved Academic Segment. Finally, we try to analyze what the film tries to pass for a villain in our Know Thine Enemy Segment.
PS: Don't watch this movie :P
This movie deals with the story of how Arthur Kriticos and his family receive news that his uncle has passed away and has left them a mysterious house as their inheritance. Little did they know that unspeakable horrors awaited for them in their new home. And for us in the audience watching this very mediocre film :P
After getting through our Movie Critique, we move to our internationally loved Academic Segment. We present to you an interview Chuy conducted with Isaac, one of the two hosts of the Hidden In The Shadows Podcast, who is also a member of a paranormal investigation team in his area. You won't wanna skip that!
Finally, we discuss the despicable Cyrus Kriticos in our Know Thine Enemy Segment. He's Arthur's uncle, and he is ultimately responsible for everything that happened in this story.
Hospitals are inherently creepy places. There's usually a palpable sense of gloom inside of them ...
For this episode, we decided to talk about the legend of La Planchada, which is the ghost of a former nurse that has allegedly helped take care of patients in critical health in hospitals throughout Mexico.
In a first for us, we also talk about a True Crime case, namely, the case of a nurse/serial killer named Jane Toppan, who was active around the 1890s and still stands as one of the most peculiar serial killers in US history.
After doing a compare/contrast on both of these stories, we found that both ladies involved have very similar origin stories. However, they each went in seemingly opposite directions when dealing with their problems.
Last but not least, Chuy decided to create another cool jam to go along with the mood of these topics.
Rob's friends surprise him with a Farewell Party after he got a job in a big (evil) corporation overseas. As the events of the party unfold (including 20-somethings drama), a giant baby monster decides it's time to wake up and wreck the city of New York. It's now up to Rob and his band of friends to document the events of the night for posterity using only a video camera from the mid 2000s.
Join us as we talk about this celebrated film! In addition to covering the cinematic stuff in our Critique Segment, we also discuss all the behind-the-scenes promotional campaign that helped to pique the audience's interest in this film during our much loved Academic Segment. It's really wild. Finally, find out how many Skulls we give Clover in our Scare Meter during our Know Thine Enemy Segment.
Are you tired of the daily grind? Is the current state of affairs finally getting to you? Worry not, we present to you two great choices to escape from reality for a while! Or possibly forever ...
Join us as we talk about The Elevator Game, in which a seemingly ordinary elevator can become a portal to another dimension. We also discuss The Hooded Man Game, in which you can summon an Uber from somewhere in the multiverse to go on a wild ride across a different landscape.
As a special bonus, Chuy decided to compose yet another Grammy-worthy original jam to go along with this episode. This one brings back the feel of some of the rock music from the late 90s and early 2000s.
Imagine feeling like the fate of the entire world depends on you arranging your furniture and decorations in circles. Or in you counting everything to make sure you have an even number of things. On top of that, you have horrible nightmares about an inter-dimensional creature that will cross into our world and destroy everything unless you make sure the eight stone pillars keeping it at bay don't become seven. It's enough to make anyone lose their mind ...
Because there's also a theme of temptation in that story, we talk about stories from religion and Greek mythology in our award winning Academic Segment, namely Adam and Eve, Pandora's Box, and Orpheus and Eurydice. Those stories have the common thread of bringing bad consequences to their protagonists for giving in to the temptations around them.
Oh, and beware of El Cuh :)
So Alex is a gem appraiser for a prestigious auction house, and she somehow gets herself involved with an ancient creature known as a Djinn when it escapes from its jewel prison after an accident caused by a drunk worker. Now it's up to Alex to save mankind from the evil Djinn in what turns out to be a very poorly acted disaster-piece of a movie ...
After we got through the brain trauma caused by this film, we were so distressed that we started to discuss wild topics in our acclaimed Academic Segment. From the mythical origins of the Djinn in Islam, to Chinese dragons and Quetzalcoatl, to basic theories of psychology, nothing was off limits.
Once that was over, we were able to compose ourselves enough to give this sorry excuse for a villain a (low) Skull Rating in our infamous Scare Meter.
Be careful what you wish for, indeed ...
