College Days! It is application season for current High School Seniors, and man, what a process!
The rising cost of college tuition and the ever-big question of the value of university education based on the school's pedigree adds pressure to students' decision-making process. According to data from ProPublica, the average cost of in-state tuition and fees for public college increased by 80% from 2000 to 2014, and additional analysis shows that for private four-year schools that average tuition and fees in looking back from 2021 to 2011, there was a 19% increase. There is a lot of pressure on high school and early college students to find a school and pick a major or a direction, yet their experiences and exposure to date have been limited.
So I thought I would share the 5 steps for making choices and choosing the path for you. Use this process to think through your options and process the emotions that accompany them.
Identify your passions: Do you love computers and gaming? Do you love health and fitness? Do you love writing or government?
Write down what you don’t like and don’t want or like. For example, “I don’t like solving science problems.”, “ I don’t want to be stuck at a desk every day!” or “I want to engage with people more than be in front of a laptop.”.
Write down the question you are answering for your major or your college, and then list the choices you are trying to make.
As you do, consider whether the option aligns with your passion. Ask yourself, “Is it financially aligned with my goals and the type of financial freedom I want later? Is it something I truly love and know I have the desire to push through learning what is needed to get to my passion, or is there something I don’t like? Write down your thoughts.
You will review what you wrote, then leave it for one day. Come back to this list on the second day and read the results. Write down what you take away from this list, and then consider whether you need to make a change, see what you need to change, or feel more aligned with where I am now. Take this list and your thoughts to a parent, friend, mentor/college advisor, discuss it, and see what you uncover. This process works for many choices in our lives, but in this Monday Moment, I encourage all students to take a small notebook and begin writing. Many super successful people write down their passions, ideas, and goals and keep writing and changing them, so try this process out.
If there are others out there in the orbit of some seniors and college students that need help, I hope you consider being a listening ear and sounding board for them. These young people are our future, and it is up to us to invest in them now!
Wishing all seniors love and support, and if you are looking for coaching & support, I have a few resources to share of professionals who can help you.
