WHAT ANIMALS EAT
WHY EAT?
All animals must eat to stay alive.
Food helps animals be strong and stay healthy.
Food also gives animals energy to move.
Animals eat many different kinds of food.
We can group animals by the kinds of food they eat.
PLANT EATERS
Many animals only eat plants.
These animals may eat grass, leaves, or flowers.
They may eat nuts, fruit, or other plant parts.
Some animals even eat bark!
Grasshoppers and some other insects only eat plants.
Many caterpillars eat plants while they are growing.
When they become butterflies, they drink the juice of flowers.
Bees also drink flower juice.
Mice eat seeds, fruit, roots, bark, and other plant parts.
Rabbits and land turtles eat grass, leaves, and other plants.
Giant pandas eat bamboo leaves.
Manatees eat plants that grow in water.
Most animals with hooves are plant eaters.
Horses, zebras, deer, and elephants only eat plants.
Plants are the only food of goats, sheep, and camels, too.
MEAT EATERS
Some animals eat other animals.
These animals eat meat.
Their food may be insects, fish, or any other animals.
Some meat eaters trap or gather their food.
Spiders make webs to catch insects.
Anteaters put their long tongues into anthills.
Sea otters gather crabs, sea stars, and other animals from seaweed forests.
Other meat eaters hunt their food.
Many frogs and bats catch insects to eat.
Penguins catch and eat fish and other ocean animals.
Lions and other big cats chase, catch, and eat hoofed animals.
Owls and hawks catch mice, rabbits, and other animals to eat.
Some meat eaters eat animals that are already dead.
They are nature’s clean-up crew.
These large birds eat dead animals.
PLANT AND MEAT EATERS
Some animals eat plants and animals.
Raccoons eat fruits, nuts, and berries.
They also eat insects, frogs, fish, mice, and eggs.
Monkeys and apes eat plants and animals, too.
Monkeys and apes live in many places around the world.
Different places have different foods for these animals.
Black bears eat berries, nuts, seeds, grass, and other plants.
They eat insects, fish, and small furry animals, too.
They also eat animals that are already dead, and they LOVE honey!
