STARS
On a clear night, you can see many stars.
Stars are objects in space that are made of burning gases.
Stars look small because they are very far away.
The sun is a star.
It is the only star we see during the day.
Some groups of stars have names.
They look like people or animals.
THE MOON
The moon is a big ball of rock.
The moon looks like the biggest object in the night sky.
It looks big because it is close to Earth.
The moon does not make light.
The moon looks bright because the sun shines on it.
The sun only shines on half of the moon at a time.
The other half of the moon is dark.
The moon looks different at different times of the month.
The moon moves around Earth.
We see different parts of the moon’s bright side at different times.
Sometimes the moon moves in front of the sun during the day.
The moon blocks the sun’s rays.
PLANETS
Planets are big objects that move around a star.
Earth is the planet we live on.
We can see five planets in the night sky.
They are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
The sun shines on half of Earth at a time.
The other half is dark.
Earth spins like a top.
We have day and night because Earth spins.
Earth moves around the sun.
Earth makes one trip around the sun each year.
The night sky looks different at different times of the year.
COMETS AND SHOOTING STARS
Comets are bits of dust and ice that move around the sun.
Comets have long tails.
Shooting stars fly through the night sky.
Shooting stars are small space rocks that burn up as they fly toward Earth.
If you blink, you will miss them!
