After shooting a Westchester County officer during a traffic stop on the Saw Mill River Parkway, Alex Mengel, 30, stole the cop’s gun and disappeared in the victim’s patrol car. Twenty-four hours later he surfaced in Dutchess County, abducted a woman from an IBM parking lot, and vanished again in her white Toyota. For the next week, police across New York and into Canada hunted a ghost. Roadblocks, helicopters, bloodhounds; nothing. Mengel, slipped across the border unnoticed. On March 3, Toronto PD spotted the missing vehicle, chased it through the city, and boxed it in after a crash.
