Today, Brian takes the first half of the show to discuss the importance of building and cultivating long-lasting professional relationships. He talks about how his industry connections have grown into close, personal friendships over decades. Brian also outlines how that has effected his ability to get steady work over the last 25+ years and how those friendships have helped in times of personal difficulty.
Brian also gives you some very important questions to ask yourself if you find this building of strong, long-lasting relationships to be a problem for you.
Next, we step into a time machine, Marty McFly-style and go back 15 years, to 2006. Today’s interview with Atlanta-native and session guitar legend Rick Hinkle was originally recorded for Brian’s very first podcast series (The Music Pro Show) and released in late 2006 / early 2007.
Rick’s recording credits over the last 50 years are too long and numerous to list here but a few of those artists whose albums Rick has played on include Paul Davis, Ben E. King, Air Raid (produced by Eddie Kramer), Sandra Hall, Vassar Clements, Kevn Kinney, Mose Jones, Grammy nominated Soul singer Howard Tate, Producer Jerry Ragavoy, and many more.
Rick is also the guitarist on the 80’s smash hit “PacMan Fever” by Buckner & Garcia.
In addition to his studio work, Rick has been an in-demand freelance guitarist for live gigs as far back as the late 60’s. Some of the marquee artists that Rick has worked for include The Tams and Lotsa Poppa.
For several years throughout the 2000’s, Brian and Rick worked together in an Atlanta-based wedding/corporate band called The Interactive Band which featured female vocalist Susan C. Bennett (who the world now knows as the Original Voice of Siri).
In this conversation, Brian and Rick discuss:

Brian and today’s guest, keyboard player and keyboard tech to the stars – Eric Frampton, go WAY back about as far as 1998. They even have the same birthday (which they usually celebrate together with a quick phone call and a virtual high five)!
Classically trained in piano from age five, Eric wears many hats including keyboardist, producer, composer, and technician. He has worked with a diverse range of artists including the B-52s, Boston, Paul Simon, Lionel Richie, Collective Soul, Yanni, Billy Currington, Mother’s Finest, Greg Manning, Tate Stevens, Stuck Mojo, and Fozzy.
Eric has written six musicals, performed on hundreds of album projects, produced commercial music for everyone from the Atlanta Braves to the QVC network, and even recorded cues for a couple of feature films.
Currently, you can also catch him performing with his 80’s tribute band, Electric Avenue.
Today, Brian and Eric dig deep into his process of preparing his parts and sounds for and playing live gigs with Electric Avenue. They also go into the other side of his career as the keyboard tech for top tier touring artists like The B-52’s, Paul Simon, Yanni, Boston, and (his current gig) Lionel Richie.

For the first 9 months of 2021, Brian and today’s guest, Atlanta-based bassist (and spy movie cue composer) Kris Dale toured in a van playing with a regional tribute band. But, their friendship extends well over a decade including playing gigs together and recording on studio projects as freelancers. Most recently, they’ve been in the studio working on the next single from singer/songwriter Mark Kovaly.
After graduating with a Studio Music/Jazz degree from the University of Miami in 1997, Kris moved back to his hometown of Atlanta and immersed himself in the jazz and blues scene. Years of backing such artists as Mike Geier (Puddle’s Pity Party), Bernadette Seacrest, Greasepaint and Rudy Ray Moore led Kris to road work with Geoff Atchison and Delta Moon. Five years on the road with Col. Bruce Hampton, the grandfather of the jam scene, followed. A dip into bluegrass territory with the Mosier Brothers (formerly Blueground Undergrass) was a wonderful return to the upright bass.
The past decade, Kris has been bringing the low end across the country with Corey Smith, a mainstay at the CMA festival and one of the hardest working road bands out there. Finding time for a more personal outlet, Kris has released 4 records under his own name and contributed electric and upright bass, steel guitar and even theremin tracks to countless albums of others.

Brian returns after a 6 month hiatus to talk about where he’s been, what he’s been doing and what sort of revelations he has had over the course of this pandemic.
There is no intro music, no advertisers, and no frills in this episode. Just a deep discussion about what it means to be and what happens when you do your work, create your art, and do those other things that truly make you “YOU”.
Coronavirus: Music Industry In Crisis – PART 2 “Who Do I Make A Living NOW?!”
Scores of musicians, audio engineers, music producers, and the assorted types of staffers that support these music industry professionals all over the globe have suddenly found themselves out-of-work due to the Coronavirus epidemic.
Since the vast majority of them are members of the “gig economy”, there is no corporation or company that will be taking care of them during this time or ensuring that each person continues to receive an income so that they can pay for rent / mortgage, utilities, groceries, and other essentials during this crisis.
So, it has fallen upon each individual to find ways to replace that lost income by brainstorming to discover, build, or divine new methods of making money utilizing whatever knowledge, skills, and resources that he / she has on-hand currently.
In this episode, Brian goes through some of the ideas that he has come up with to try and replace some of his lost income. Additionally, he gives you some questions that you can ask yourself which might help you uncover new ways to make money during this time.
Ultimately, the hope of this episode is to help you find a way to avoid or minimize the devastating effects that a global event like this will have on your life and income in the future.

Coronavirus: Music Industry In Crisis – PART 1 “What Do You Do With All This *Free Time*”
For hundreds of thousands of musicians, audio engineers, producers, and scores of music industry support staff, the world has come to a screeching halt.
For the vast majority of them, being out-of-work means not receiving a paycheck of any sort. Even for musicians who are members of the AFM (musicians’ union), there is apparently no help coming to save them from a global economic crisis that is in full effect at this very moment.
No one is immune to the effects that the coronavirus is having on the music industry and the world at large.
Over the course of three podcasts, Brian Stephens talks candidly about the struggles he is having during this time and offers up some of the ideas & solutions he is pursuing in an attempt to salvage his business and maintain his sanity.
Here in Part 1, Brian offers some strategies for utilizing this new, possibly unwanted, “free time” that help you maintain your creative flow, take care of the life that is going on immediately around you, stay connected to friends and colleagues, and plan for what comes next in a world that will never be the same after this crisis is resolved.

This week, Brian takes on a whole new format for the show as he talks about becoming a Church Sound / Audio Professional.
Since 2005, Brian has been a Front of House mixing engineer, live / on-location recording engineer, and audio training specialist for churches all over the Metro Atlanta area. For almost 10 years, from 2008-2018, he was the A/V Co-Ordinator and Lead A1 / Front of House Mixer for Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.
During that time, he helped design audio & video systems and implement cutting edge AV technology across their large campus that serves thousands of people each week. Brian also lead a team of audio engineers and video production specialists that helped them compete in the ever-changing landscape of flagship contemporary churches in the affluent & vibrant Buckhead area of that city.
Currently, Brian can be found mixing Front of House for the Contemporary Worship service at Roswell United Methodist Church in Roswell, Georgia.
In today’s episode, Brian covers 5 questions you should ask yourself if you are interested in becoming a part-time or full-time Church Sound Professional:
(And you will learn that, ultimately, these same questions could be asked about any new opportunity in the field of audio engineering.)
The Church Sound market is a growing industry for audio engineers! Anyone that loves working with audio and directly servicing the people who enjoy and derive pleasure from great sound should think about a full-time career or part-time “side hustle” as an audio professional in the church world!
