  • 017 Peter Bryant: The Crypto Prof
EP17 Peter Bryant: The Crypto Prof

Welcome to episode 17 of the Fail Forward podcast.

In this episode, I'm talking to Peter Bryant, also known as The Crypto Prof.

Over the next hour, you'll be taken on a fascinating journey through the world of music, psychology, hedge funds and crypto currency.

In his own unique, and fascinating way Peter draws parallels between investing in crypto and running a business whilst demystifying this often misunderstood topic.

During the interview, I ask Peter searching questions about how psychology affects everything from the world economy to the day to day decisions we all make, how to create the mental resilience to 'zoom out' from a problem and view the bigger picture and why failure is a crucial part of life we have to learn to get comfortable with.

Throughout this episode, Peter is open about his own successes and failures, how he has learned to listen to his gut reaction and why he's now building a unique business model that depends wholly on the success he achieves for his clients.

You'll learn why crypto is the future and what he means when he talks about dumb and smart money. SPOILER ALERT - it's probably not what you think it is.

Peter demonstrates how following a passion can truly change the trajectory of your life and what he means when he says "failure has to be understood in context".

As a practising psychotherapist and founder of Clearly Crypto, Peter is passionate about helping flexible investment available to anyone rather than the playground of the most wealthy.

Join me for a fascinating 60 minutes that will leave you with a better understanding of crypto, and evidence that the fear of failure is always worse than the reality.

If you enjoy listening to Peter's story, you can buy his book Crypto Profit here, follow him on LinkedIn, YouTube, or Twitter. Alternatively you can contact him via his website.

  • 016 The importance of Goal Setting
EP16 The importance of goal setting

Welcome to episode 16 of the Fail Forward podcast.

You wouldn't attempt to drive from Southampton to Scotland without a map, a satnav or a good plan for how you are going to get there.

Yet one of the most common things I see when working with new members of my tree surgery mastermind, is a lack of planning. Either a total absence or a very hit and miss approach that just doesn't get results.

Over the years Sarah and I have been pretty good at planning. It's become part of our holiday ritual to reflect on what we've achieved and plan our goals for the coming year. These days it's something I have implemented to a whole new level - in business and in my personal life.

In this episode you will learn:

The four key plans you need in order to keep moving towards your goals

How to get from a 5 year vision to a weekly to do list

What a 'good' goal looks like

Why 90 cycles are the ultimate key to your success

How to avoid creating a plan you will never achieve

This is a process I work through with every member of my tree surgery mastermind. It's a key tool to ensure that every action you take in your business is meaningful whilst reducing the risk of procrastination.

If, after listening, you would like to know more, please reach out. My inboxes are open and I'm happy to help you understand how to create a plan that will move you towards your goals.

  • 015 The Importance Of Networking
    EP15 The importance of networking

Welcome to episode 15 of the Fail Forward podcast.

In this episode I'm going to share my insights about the importance of building a broad network around you. It's something I didn't think too much about the first time around. But when I opened my mind to self development and started learning how to create a strong, resilient business, time after time networking came up as a critical marketing channel.

Tim Sanders' popular quote says: "Networking is your net worth" and it's something I now totally understand.

In this episode you will learn:

What happened at my first ever networking event

Why networking is about so much more than selling your business

    The unexpected gains from networking

How to stop networking getting in the way of your business

Running a business can be lonely. There will always be things you can't talk about with your customers, your team, your friends or your family. Networking enables you to build lasting relationships that fill a gap and ensures that there are people in your corner. Cheering you on as you succeed, lending a listening ear when things are challenging and giving you high fives as you achieve your goals.

If, after listening, you would like to know more, please reach out. My inboxes are open and I'm happy to help you identify what networking opportunities you could try.

  • 013 Why Coaches, Mentors and Masterminds are important!

Welcome to episode 13 of the Fail Forward podcast.

If you've listened to previous episodes, you'll have heard me talking about how changing my mindset about education has been key to rebuilding my life after I lost my first business.

I left school with the firmly-held belief that education wasn't for me. I'd failed at school (or perhaps school had failed me) and from there on in, I was going to work things out on my own. Hard work and determination were to become my mantra.

Now - with the benefit of years of experience and gloriously clear hindsight, I can see just how wrong I was.

I enlisted the help of my first business coach 10 years into my business and, far too late. Until that point I'd relied on my dad for advice and, whilst he's a fabulous parent, he was simply too emotionally attached to be objective.

Coaches and mentors are emotionally detached and have different areas of expertise or focus. But they have one important thing in common - accountability. They make you accountable for your actions.

But that's not all they offer - and in this episode I; examine the difference between coaches and mentors; share the value of peer group masterminds; and help you to visualise the endless possibilities that are there when you open your mind to the power of education.

  • 012 Why you need to know your numbers!

Welcome to episode 12 of the Fail Forward podcast.

In previous episodes, I've talked about the four critical pillars to building a successful business. In this episode we take a deep dive into numbers covering:

Why you need to get a grip of your numbers..

What happens if you don't know your numbers.

A technique I use in all my businesses that you can immediately implement in yours.

When you listen to this episode you'll learn the unlikely link between knowing your numbers and elephants, why emotional decision making is a shortcut to disaster and the metrics I measure each and every week that act as an early warning system for potential problems in my businesses.

    You'll get great value from this episode if you've ever lost sleep worrying about;

    Whether or not you'll have enough cash in the bank to pay the wages at the end of the month;

If HMRC are going to be knocking on your door; or

Whether you can invest in vital tools or services to grow your business.

Money is still a hugely taboo topic of conversation but if you seek help and support - from someone inside your business or an external consultant - you can learn the skills and systems you need to steer your business back onto the path for success.

If you do one thing today - listen to this episode and start understanding the importance of knowing your numbers.

Please remember that I am not an accountant. My advice is based on the lessons I've learned and my own personal experience. That said, they are personal experiences I know I share with other business owners who have failed in the past, making it a common problem!

  • 011 Finding the 4 Pillars to a Sustainable Business

Welcome to episode 11 of the Fail Forward podcast.

In previous episodes, I've touched on what I believe are the four critical pillars you need to build a successful business. In this episode I take you through each one in turn, explaining why I think they're so important.

    You will learn:

    What the four pillars are

How the four pillars support your business

How to get started with implementing the four pillars in your business

I have no doubt there'll be experts out there shouting at me that there are far more than four key pillars to building a successful business. And they're right.

However, when you're just starting out, or are up to your neck spinning all the business plates, or when things are going wrong you need to keep it simple. You have to start somewhere.

The four pillars in this episode have come about from everything I've read, the courses I've attended and - as you'd expect - the 'What went wrong' document from when I lost my first business.

These pillars, along with a healthy dose of GSD (listen in to find out what that is) are the framework I'm building multiple businesses on, and they are easy for YOU to start implementing today.

If you do one thing today - listen to this episode and start planning how to implement the four pillars in your business. Your successful future self will thank you for it.

  • 010 Daniel Fitzhenry - I made a commitment

Welcome to episode 10 of the Fail Forward podcast.

In this episode, I'm talking toDaniel Fitzhenry, Conservative Leader of Southampton City Council. Over the next forty minutes, you'll hear first-hand Daniel's journey so far, what's gone wrong and how he bounced back to use his experience to be a driving force for change across the city of Southampton

During the interview, I've asked Daniel searching questions about what it means to be successful and how to recover when things go wrong. We examine the conditioning we are all exposed to that affect our thought patterns and the impact that happens when you challenge thosed conditioned beliefs.

Throughout this episode, Daniel is open about his successes, how a life in politics has meant having to overcome the fear of public scrutiny of his failures.

You'll learn about his journey from his early years selling fruit and veg on his grandparents market stall to the ambitious political leader he is today.

Daniel's story shines a light on the importance of understanding yourself, understanding what drives and motivates others, staying true to your values even if things look impossible, and why asking for help is never a sign of weakness.

As the leader of Southampton City Council, Daniel is spearheading a campaign to "Get Southampton Moving" aiming high for the city that's been his lifelong home and he shares how combining his political and business experiences enables him to lead a team of visonaries with the power to change the shape of Southampton.

  • 009 Winging It V Self Development

Welcome to episode 9 of the Fail Forward podcast.

In my early, boom days as a business owner I often joked about the fact I was 'winging it'. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't blagging it. I was emulating people in my industry who seemed to have it nailed. I was jumping in at the deep end, working things out as I went along and failing forward.

Until I couldn't any longer. I learned the hard way, winging it is not sustainable!

When my ability to successfully wing it ran out I turned to a business coach, Jeff Shrimpton. Quickly identifying that I had fallen into the hero trap that affects so many business owners, he recommended I read, One minute manager meets the monkey by Hal Burrows, Ken Blanchard, and William Oncken.

"I don't do reading" was the most telling statement I could have made. I had closed my mind to learning.

If you've listened to previous episodes you'll already know I've radically changed my mindset and am now an avid learner. Books, courses, mentoring, mastermind events - I'm hungrier for knowledge and learning opportunities now than at any other time in my life.

Whilst that shift came too late to save the business, it's helped my recovery and is the reason I have four (and counting) growing businesses that are all far more robust than my first ever was.

In this episode I explore the importance of striking the right balance between winging it and self development. If you don't, and are too busy getting your ducks in a perfect row, you will miss opportunities. Balancing learning and winging it empowers you to gain traction and achieve success faster.

After all, if you aren't trying, finding points of failure and overcoming them, are you really moving forward?

  • 008 Juggling parenting and life can be tough!

Welcome to episode 8 of the Fail Forward podcast.

If you've listened to previous episodes, you'll know that I'm a family man. Parenting and business are both super tough in their own right. Put them together and the pressure can feel overwhelming. This episode is part reflection of my own parenting journey and part some advice I wish I'd had before things went wrong.

    Parenting through the good times

When my daughter was born, life was good. I had a thriving business, we had a nice lifestyle, and our baby girl was the icing on the top of a bloody good cake.

I took time off to bond with my daughter - she was the apple of my eye and I treasured every minute I spent with her.

Fatherhood was everything I'd hoped it would be.

    Parenting under pressure

Our little boy arrived just as things were hitting an all time low. I should have been around more but I was stressed, panicking and "in the room" whilst simultaneously being totally absent.

I became fixated by my phone. Checking the bank account, looking at my emails, trying to find solutions and praying for a miracle (which we know didn't come).

During the early months I struggled to bond with our wonderful little boy.

Becoming the parent I wanted to be

Losing the business and our family home forced me to evaluate everything in my life - including who I was as a parent.

I am not a perfect parent and this episode isn't intended to guilt trip or criticise. Perfection, in my opinion, doesn't exist. We all have to find acceptance that it's all a question of balance and set our own non-negotiables (episode 6 explains these in more detail).

Even in parenting to the very best of our ability I do believe we are, in fact, failing forward.
