Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast.
"The ability to regulate your performance and your mental and physical state will determine the success in your business."
That's quite a powerful sentence when you break it down.
Essentially it means that, as the business owner, it's all on you. And that can feel like a lot of pressure.
But here's the thing - when you know you HOW to show up as your best self, it becomes a lot easier to do so.
In this episode I share:
> Some of the techniques you can implement to make it easier to show up as your best self - even on the days you don't feel like it.
> What works for me (and made my wife say "I told you so").
> How finding what works for you will transform all aspects of your life.
As a business owner you are a natural-born problem solver. And whilst you might not think you're creative, it's often surprising how creative you will be when you allow yourself the head space for ideas to come.
Listen now and ask yourself; when you consider what you can achieve without being the best you can be - how great could your business be if you allowed yourself to reach your full potential each and every day?

Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast.
What left Stephen Bartlett feeling empty when he learned his company was worth millions?
Why did Jonny Wilkinson plummet into depression after taking England to World Cup Victory?
What has that got to do with you and your business?
The answer is, remembering the journey is as important as the destination!
In fact, the journey is arguably the most important and most fun part of achieving your goals. Because once you achieve them - what's next?
Yet, when you're faced with cash flow problems, struggling to win new business, losing great members of your team, or any of the other headaches that are part and parcel of running a business, seeing the greatness in everyday life can be hard.
In this episode I explore the benefit of gratitude.
Maybe you're thinking (as I used to) that gratitude is an "airy fairy concept" that can't have a significant impact on your life.
I'm here to tell you why that's not the case. And why taking time every day to practice gratitude (aka count your blessings as our grannies used to tell us) is actually an incredibly powerful tool that will help you stay motivated even on the toughest of days.
As a business owner you are often future focused. Always ticking off your never-ending action list and moving on to the next thing. Until problems pile up and you wonder "What's the point?"
Listen now and consider how stopping to notice and appreciate the good stuff is the gold that will ensure you don't hit your biggest goals, only to be left feeling cold!

Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast.
In this episode I'm talking to Amy Rowlinson, podcaster, coach and podcasting mentor.
During the next 40 minutes Amy shares the twists and turns of her career taking her from unfulfilled employee on auto-pilot to a purpose-led coach, mentor and podcaster helping others align their lives with their values and create exciting mid-life beginnings.
Amy's passion for personal growth, her fearless approach to embracing change and her desire to seize new opportunities are evident throughout the interview. She reflects on how a rowing incident aged 14 profoundly shaped her attitude towards dealing with life's inevitable setbacks with inspiring optimism.
As you'd expect from this podcast, together we explore how the end of a business at the start of Covid changed Amy's direction in a way she could never have predicted - surely the true essence of failing forward!
Going beyond Amy's journey we also talk about the importance of helping children develop a growth mindset from an early age, the value of recognising effort over outcomes and why you must discover your own values in order to build a life that aligns with them.
You can also find out what Amy's response was when asked, "What does failure mean to you?" and hear why she believes that when you align your values with your work, you will become valued for your work.
This uplifting episode will leave you inspired to embrace intelligent risks, and open yourself to new and exciting experiences in order to ensure that where you are, is exactly where you should be.

Welcome to episode 34 of the Fail Forward podcast.
In September 2022 I took the Tree Surgeons Business Academy to the APF Show. One thing that quickly became clear is that the concept of a business mastermind isn't well understood across the industry.
In this episode, I expressly talk about what a mastermind is, and how it helps tree surgery businesses.
Not a tree surgeon? No problem - this episode will still help you understand more about how masterminds help whatever the business type.
In just 20 minutes you'll find out:
Listen now and ask yourself; how would it feel to build a profitable, efficient business that works without you?

Welcome to episode 33 of the Fail Forward podcast.
We've all heard the saying "Good things happen when you step out of your comfort zone" and I couldn't agree more.
In fact, I reframe the so-called comfort zone as a danger zone. Because, all too often, when you are comfortable you relax. Maybe even become a little complacent. And, in my experience, you become a little less productive.
In this episode I explore why being out of your comfort zone can result in the most productive periods of your life, how to overcome the challenge of staying out of your comfort zone and test why, if you think you're OK with being comfortable, you should think again.
Because one thing's for sure - if you could bottle the productivity that happens when you're facing tough times, you'd be amazed at what you could achieve.
Listen now and ask yourself; what do you need to do to keep pushing forward, to fail fast, to fail often but most importantly to fail forward?

Welcome to episode 32 of the Fail Forward podcast.
In this episode I'm talking to Toyin Ayandare, founder of Icon Range.
Over the course of the next 40 minutes, Toyin shares her journey from a young girl who relocated from Nigeria to the UK, to the head of a growing, profitable property portfolio and training business. From her earliest experiences of finding work in the UK, to leaving corporate life in order to pursue her dream of building financial freedom, Toyin talks openly about what fuelled her determination to succeed despite being "young, female and black".
During the interview, I explore how Toyin built started on her property journey, through to her current position as a well respected property entrepreneur who now shows other people how to forge their own way in the property business.
Having had no knowledge or support, and relying wholly on what she learned from Homes Under the Hammer, Toyin talks about the ups and downs of forging her own path despite the pivotal moment she realised she was a success and how she overcomes moments of self-doubt.
This inspirational episode will challenge you to open yourself to opportunity and to trust in the process whilst always seeking ways to grow. Listen now and be inspired to become the "architect of your own life".
If you enjoyed listening to Toyin's story or would like to know more about Icon Range, you can follow her on Twitter or Instagram, alternatively you can contact her via her website.

Welcome to episode 31 of the Fail Forward podcast.
In this episode I'm talking to Gordon Grant, founder of Dads Mean Business.
Over the course of the next 50 minutes, Gordon shares his journey from the weary days of selling bootleg video games, his life as a single, globe-trotting professional to the life-altering realisation that as a husband and father he needed to make significant changes to his life.
During the interview, I explore how Gordon recognised the need to change direction, what that meant for his business and how he rebuilt a new purpose-driven path that now allows him to help other dads create positive change in their own lives.
Learn about the 7 key steps of the Dads Mean Business programme and how its basis in accountability and commitment moves you incrementally towards your business and personal goals.
This thought-provoking episode will challenge you to open your mindset to the possibilities of doing things differently and show you the very real value of asking:
"What's your one tip?"

Welcome to episode 30 of the Fail Forward podcast.
I can hardly believe that this episode marks six months since the launch of the Fail Forward Podcast. Thank you to everyone who has watched, listened, shared and joined the conversation.
Content over the up and coming 9-12 episodes is going to become more aimed at tree surgery business owners who I know are listening. There will still be plenty of value if you're not a tree surgeon so do stay tuned!
In this episode I am talking about self development and why I wish my business had failed faster than it did!
Yep - you heard right. I wish I'd failed sooner.
Because if I had, I'd have learned the amazing power of self development years ago.
I'm someone who moved around a lot as a kid, played truant, failed my GCSEs, and considered myself "done with learning" the day I walked out of school for the very last time.
Working hard was my answer. But eventually that didn't work anymore and - as I've shared many times before - things then fell apart.
Warren Buffett famously said, "the more you learn the more you earn".
He was right!
My epiphany came when I read The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey. It changed everything I thought I knew and ignited my passion for self-development.
In this episode I share how I went from a fixed mindset that learning was pointless to an avid consumer of education and self development, and how I'm using that to help tree surgery business owners in the Tree Surgery Business Academy.
Listen now, then head to www.tsbauk.co.uk for more information about Tree Surgery Business Academy webinars.

Welcome to episode 29 of the Fail Forward podcast.
In this episode I am talking about mental health and vulnerability. Suicide affects men and women but, in the UK, is the biggest killer of men in certain age groups. To me, the thought that anyone thinks they have no alternative but to end their own life is heartbreaking.
As men we grow up hearing male adjectives like; tough; strong; macho; manning up. We hide our feelings and can believe it's weak to show our vulnerability.
None of that is true.
If you've listened to past episodes of this podcast you'll know that when my business failed I went through some dark times myself. I suffered extreme anxiety, I had dark thoughts and I allowed myself to fall into negative addiction patterns, eating and drinking too much to try and forget what was happening in my life.
But one thing I did well was talking about things. I talked to my wife, friends and family. And here's what I learned.
Talking lightens the load.
The other thing I've learned is we need to limit our exposure to things that make us feel bad. Mainstream media, social media, negative people - maybe even watching our favourite sports team!
Listen now to hear my thoughts on the power of talking, why we have two ears and one mouth for a reason and the importance of checking in on people beyond a comment on social media or an occasional text.
It's OK not to be OK and to talk to people about what you're going through.
Please join me to help even just one person who is going through a hard time and show them that there is an alternative.
Please listen, share and start the conversation today.

Welcome to episode 28 of the Fail Forward podcast.
OK - this is going to hurt.
If you can't take two weeks off, work flexibly in terms or hours or location, or completely switch off from time to time - your business needs to change.
In fact if your business can't function without you - you don't have a business, you have a job!
And it's probably a very underpaid job as well…
In this episode I unpick what it really means to build a commercial enterprise that works without you, how to balance 'time in the trenches' with working on your business, and how my 4 pillars of a successful business can help you.
Join me as we explore the role of coaching and mentoring in helping you transition from successful sole trader to leader of a business that works even when you don't.
After all - I'm willing to bet you didn't start your business to be overworked, underpaid, stressed and anxious!
