  • 057 Millionaire in training

Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast.

The 12th April 2023 marks 12 months to the day that I took the plunge and started the Fail Forward podcast and I'm feeling a little reflective.

This podcast, becoming a keynote speaker in property and building an industry changing mastermind are, for me, all part of my training to achieve my goals, dreams and aspirations.

To build a legacy for my family and to create positive change for those I'm privileged to help along the way.

And everytime I deliver a keynote speech or record a new episode of the podcast, I move 1% closer to achieving mastery of these skills.

There are always a million and one reasons to put off working towards your goals. But my advice is, remember the words of Rob Moore, "Start now, get perfect later".

Compound your daily learnings, look for ways to improve and avoid comparing yourself to others.

The only comparison you need to make is with the you of yesterday.

And I'd love to know - what are you in training to become?

Have a listen to this episode and I'd love to hear your thoughts. If you're enjoying the Fail Forward podcasts, follow me on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or LinkedIn for all the latest on my mission to help business owners Fail Forward.

  • 056 Interview: Julie Wong

Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast.

Regular listeners of the Fail Forward Podcast plus members of my Tree Surgeons Mastermind will have heard me talk about the importance of knowing your numbers for some time now.

In this episode I'm joined by "accidental accountant", business coach and finance mentor, Julie Wong.

"If you're not in control of your finances, you're not in control of your business."

Julie shares how her dentistry destiny took an unexpected turn, and how, after accepting an accounting role in one of her first interviews after university, she has gone one to develop a keen commercial acumen that helps business owners achieve their goals.

Far from being a dull and dry lecture about accounting, in this fast paced episode Julie explains what three numbers you MUST know about your business and why; how your accountant can add value to your business; and what to do if you don't understand a word your accountant says!

As a Fractional Finance Director for small businesses Julie combines the ability to understand what drives business growth and to translate that into robust, actionable strategies that help her clients achieve their goals.

This episode will be 40 minutes well spent if you're ready to make sound commercial decisions based on facts not feelings and lose the fear of putting up your prices. You may even be convinced to learn to love spreadsheets - the "numerical play doh" on which you can model and adapt your business.

  • 055 Failing Forward for a whole year

Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast.

Imagine what your life would be like if it was impossible to fail.

In this, the 1st birthday episode, I'm talking about the power of ice baths, personal accountability and getting out of the blame game.

It's not that long since I was terrified to walk into a room of 20 business owners at a networking event. Now, I'm standing up delivering key notes to 600+ people and sharing some of my innermost thoughts on this podcast every week.

And learning to do that has been tough. But it's been amazing too!

When you move towards the things that you fear, you take positive actions that lead you to success.

Have a listen and - as always - I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  • 054 Why I do what I do

Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast.

"Henri - why do you bother?"

In this episode I'm talking about why I do what I do.

Juggling multiple businesses and growing a community isn't easy. And sometimes people ask me why I bother.

The truth is, helping people gives you the kind of buzz that's hard to get anywhere else.

As a bit of a petrol head I'm familiar with the buzz of driving a fast car. But when you own your dream car, it's only a matter of time before you're yearning for the next one.

Yet when you know that you are helping other people bring their dreams to fruition - the buzz is on a different level.

I challenge you to find 3 ways to help others this week and see how great it makes you feel.

Have a listen and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  • 053 Talking about addiction

Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast.

In this episode I'm talking about addiction.

It's something close to my heart, and something I don't shy away from talking about "in real life" but have never really spoken about on the podcast.

Yet it's an important topic that can affect anyone.

Addictions come in many different forms - exercise, alcohol, food, sex, dieting, drugs - legal and not - the list goes on.

Whatever the addiction is, they stem from the common fact that something in your life is not serving you in a positive way.

For me, drugs were my addiction. As a young person I enjoyed going out, partying and having a great time. Until it stopped being fun.

In this episode I talk about what it's taken me to get (and stay) clean, how my friends and family have been affected, and how I check-in with my resilience from time to time.

Addictions don't happen overnight. And they can't be tackled overnight either.

I invite you to have a listen to my story and, if you'd like to reach out, my DMs are open.

  • 052 Building winning teams

Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast.

Ever heard someone say "If you want a job doing right, do it yourself"?

    Absolute nonsense!

In fact, I suspect trying to do everything myself used to be my biggest weak spot.

    In this episode I explore:

    > Why you must trust in other to achieve your big goals

    > Why it's OK for people in your business to better than you

    > Why you have to learn to accept that 70-80% perfect is good enough

    > What tasks you should outsource and the ones you really shouldn't

If you are serious about achieving ambitious business and personal goals, you have to learn how to build a winning team. Surrounding yourself with people who are great at the stuff you're not so good at, allows you to focus totally on the aspects of your business that play to your strengths. In turn you have more energy to use where it's needed and can be more creative.

Have a listen and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  • 051 Interview: Ellie McKay

Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast.

In this episode I'm joined by the host of the "On a mission" podcast, Ellie McKay.

"The more you learn, the more you learn you know nothing!"

As the host of her own podcast that is regularly in the top 3 downloads in its genre, there was never a moment's doubt that Ellie would be an amazing guest.

Listen now for an uplifting and entertaining hour Ellie talks about her breathtaking journey from life as a 19 year old high flying sales leader, via the brink of bankruptcy, to the successful owner of multiple businesses and host of a chart topping podcast.

If you have ever felt like it's too late to change your life, or that you'll "never be as lucky" as those who inspire you, this episode will challenge that perspective.

As a child, Ellie saw the impact of business when it goes wrong. As a result she had never considered business to be an option for her life. In fact, at one point she even fancied herself as the next Kate Adie.

However, there was no fighting her entrepreneurial genes! In the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity Ellie, along with her husband Mark, has created a level of success most people only ever dream of.

In this episode we explore the life changing epiphanies Ellie has experienced and why she believes it's OK to make mistakes - as long as you don't keep making the same ones!

This frank, funny and occasionally sweary episode includes a little oversharing and a lot of insights that will inspire you to keep going, keep upgrading and "just f*&%ing do it".

  • 050 Paying for advice vs free advice

Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast.

With so much free advice readily available on podcasts, websites, YouTube and even from your mates at the pub - why bother paying for it?

"Free advice is worth every penny!" Rob Moore

When I first heard this I didn't quite understand what Rob meant. But now I do and it's so true.

    In this episode I share:

    > The problem with free advice

    > A great example of how free advice isn't valued

    > Why paying for advice is not a cost!

Have a listen and I'd love to hear if the points covered resonate with you. Or are you the rare beast who acts on free advice?

  • 049 Caring less about what people think of me

Welcome to the Fail Forward podcast.

A podcast guest once said to me, "What other people think of me is none of my business!"

Does it bother you what people think of you?

From a young age I moved around a lot, went to lots of different schools and had to become good at making friends.

And it really bugged me if people didn't like me.

Looking back now I can see that it's perfectly normal. Nobody likes everyone. There are people you click with and people you don't - and that's OK.

Despite knowing this, it's taken me a long time to learn not to care what other people think of me. Although the last few years of creating regular social media content has certainly helped me develop a thicker skin!

    In this episode I explore:

    > The freedom that comes from not caring what others think

    > The importance of being authentic in all that you do

  • 048 Turning up as a human being

"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right." Henry Ford

I've heard a lot of quotes over the years and this is one that always stays with me.

How we show up in life - business or personal - impacts everything we do. So it's vital that we take time to check in with ourselves from time to time.

Something I've recently learned, and started to use with the people I mentor is scoring my energy in five different ways.

    In this episode I share:

    > The five critical energies you need to measure.

    > What works for me to help you find what might work for you.

    > The impact scoring your energy can have on the various aspects of your life.

Listen now and ask yourself; do you consistently turn up in the way you want, or could you do better?
