  • The Reality: Reconciling Helplessness and Hope

Lamentations 4:1-12,21-22 One of the many reasons that I love the book of Lamentations is because of what the book does not do. It does not resolve the pain of God’s actions quickly or neatly. It doesn’t answer all of our questions. It doesn’t communicate things in a way that is tidy or even comfortable. And it does not downplay the significance of the struggle or the pain.

Lamentations is not linear. And that is why I love it. Life is not always predictable or easy to manage. Suffering, whether innocent or deserved, does not follow a formula, and grief is certainly not tame.  The emotions, questions, struggles, fears, and frustrations in the midst of hardship are very real and difficult, at times, to process.

Do you know that the Bible commends this kind of brokenness? Do you know that brokenness can create a God-ordained path to mercy?

By brokenness I mean when God removes the objects we trust  we are driven to hope in Him. It is a season where your “crutches” in life have been kicked out, and your only hope is God.  The result of brokenness awakens you to need God’s mercy.

  • The Hope: God’s Steadfast Love

    Lam. 3:19-33

How do you survive or even spiritually thrive when in the middle of suffering?  What are thoughts that would help you walk through wide-spread destruction?  What are some theological truths to help guide you when you life feels like a wasteland?  How do fight the daily battle and maneuver through life with a biblical lens?  Hope is what you’re looking for during those times.  This message can be summed up with this statement:  Hope springs from truth rehearsed!  God has demonstrated and reminded us of His steadfast love in our lives and this this hope keeps us holding on because the truth gets rehearsed.

  • The Pain: When God Feels Like an Adversary

    Lam. 2:1-22; Hebrews 12: 25,29

In our text today, Jeremiah wants us to see things from Different angles and in full color.  He wants to make sure we see two things. First, he wants us to see the extent of the destruction and how bad it really is.  And, secondly, Jeremiah clearly wants you to know that God is the one behind it.  Babylon May be the means, but God was the one orchestrating the judgement.

But there is a very important warning that every believer should hear regardless of what is going on in your life right now.  Lamentations is telling you that God is holy.  It shows you the dark side of God’s glory.  This text helps you to soberly allow your heart to turn again to God’s glory.

  • The Cause: A Broken World

    Lam. 1:1-11; 2 Cor. 4:7-14

Our world is broken.  It’s been twisted from the very beginning.  Realtionships break, sexuality breaks, hearts break, nations break, health breaks, politics breaks.  All the glue, tape, and positive thing king can’t put it back together again.  The emotional fatigue you feel can be traced back to sin in the world.  While this may be simplistic to understand, the results are often complex and require suffering, repair, and submission to Christ.

Simply put, we live in a broken world.  In your lamenting, you see that you can have valuable knowledge of God in your mind, but you are fragile and frail.  You are easily broken.  But God’s Word also reveals the power and grace of God, through your pursuit of, regardless of your fracturing, you can be saved and repaired from this broken world, despite your brokenness.

  • Fairfield – For Thy Pleasure because Thou Art Worthy

Rev.1:4-8; 4:1-11; Psalm 147:11; Phil. 2:13; 1 Thess. 1:10-12.   Chik-Fil-A has a policy that their employees respond to the customers as they make requests with the words "my pleasure". I love it and think that it is quite appropriate, but I have to ask myself, "Do they really mean what they are saying, or are they simply quoting a memorized phrase?

When a person is making a trip to another land, the question invariably will come up, "Is this trip for business or for pleasure?" The general thinking is that it is either related to work or to leisure. But for the Church, the business of the kingdom of God is, always, for HIS pleasure.  He alone is worthy!

God is everything in superlative abundance!  He is our supreme authority!  He has all riches. He is all wisdom! He is all-powerful!   He is all honorable and glorious! He is worthy to be praised, worship, and reverenced!

The amazing thing is that when God created mankind in His own likeness, He gave us (the Church) a measure of His authority, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, and glory.   All these blessings and gifts are entrusted to the Church and come from God.

So, you must conclude that God is worthy of everything in your life.  Your God is worthy to receive them back from you in the form of thanksgiving, praise, and the dedication of your life to Him.  He created you for His pleasure!

The choice must come for every person that makes up the Fairfield church – Is this journey for your pleasure or for His pleasure?  You must make the choices. Will you (the church) seek your pleasures outside or inside of Christ?

  • Laodicea – Let’s Go Shopping

Laodicea was a vibrant city in the first century.  Much like our American culture, they were driven by hard work, determination, self-will, and a deep desire for progress, innovation, and prosperity.  As a result, the city flourished and didn’t need much from anyone else.  While it’s okay for a city to develop itself in the middle of commercialism and free market enterprise, it’s different when a church does the same to an extent that they no longer need the presence and power of Jesus in ministries they are doing.  This is where we find the church of Laodicea in Jesus’ message to them.  In this message we will look at the dangers of pride and self-sufficiency in the church, and how to rightly place our dependence on the all-satisfying sufficiency of the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  • Philadelphia – An Open Door

A small church in size and influence compared to those around them.  Philadelphia was the first of two churches in Revelation to have no corrections from Jesus.  Though they would have faced all of the same temptations of culture and compromise.  Jesus commended them for keeping His Word and not denying His name.  Not only did they know the Word, they aligned their lives to it as they followed Christ, and Jesus told them to hold fast, persevere and finish well, for there would be benefits for an open door in the future for remaining faithful now.  May we follow the example of the Church of Brotherly Love, knowing the Bible well and doing what it says.

  • Sardis – Restored Back to Life

The church at Sardis started well.  They had a history of faithfulness to the things of God.  Rather than staying vigilant and true the Word of God, they became a dead church as they lived off the security of the past and allowed for compromise in the present.  The church is facing a similar challenge like Sardis.  May we continue to be faithful to the Lord and live according to being light in the darkness, spending time with Him daily so we can love the people around us while holding fast to the truth of His Word.

  • Thyatira - A Holy Inspection

The church of Thyatira was a church zealously committed to love and good deeds.  Like many churches of our day, they excelled in social Justice, and serving as the hands and feet of Jesus, extending compassion towards those who needed it.  Yet in time, their love grew without discernment, and in the name of tolerance they began to love the very things that Jesus hates.  In this message we’ll examine what it looks like to be a church that is all love with no truth and learn how we can guard ourselves from the cultural temptation of compromise.  The lesson of Thyatira is blunt:  be careful to not compromise the Truth, do not go back to ways you were called out of.

  • Smyrna - A Call to Not Fear

Smyrna was a wealthy and beautiful city that had been faithful to Rome.  While the city was rich, the church at Smyrna was poor, having experienced financial persecution after being kicked out of the marketplace by the Roman government for their refusal to worship Caesar.  Suffering has now surrounded God’s church, and the Christians at this early church in Smyrna was no exception.  They faced a smorgasbord of suffering, including poverty, slander, imprisonment, and death. Jesus had a response for them and for those of us who suffer today.  We can have peace.  Every Christian will experience victory over trial and trouble.

Jesus wrote to commend them on their endurance, but also to encourage and comfort them during a greater persecution that was coming.  They would be called to give up their lives for the sake of the gospel. In this message, we will look at he depths of our love for Jesus, our understanding of His grace, and the value we give Him in our everyday lives.  Are you willing to pay a price to follow Jesus in the light of the price he paid for you on the cross and the promise He gives of eternal life?
