Psychologists will tell you that people often fall victim to faulty thinking that goes something like this, It hasn’t happened, so it won’t. Put another way, It can’t happen to me.
The reality is, just because an event hasn’t occurred yet, in no way means it can’t. The coronavirus pandemic is a case in point. Today, host Rob West talks with Howard Dayton about preparing for the next crisis.Howard Dayton is the founder of Compass: Finances God’s Way and the original host of this program.
The Crisis Budget is more about planning for a financial disaster than reacting to it.
About 10 years ago, Compass developed what I call a Crisis Budget for individuals or married couples. The Crisis Budget is to be decided on before a crisis occurs be it a loss of job, serious health issue, you name it.
The objective of the Crisis Budget is to make decisions now about how you’re going to reduce your total spending that you’ll be in a better position to survive the crisis.
The advantages of doing the Crisis Budget now is that you’re not experiencing stress. You’re not under the pressure of making quick decisions on how to cut back. You and your spouse, if you’re married, can discuss this and decide the best steps to take should a crisis hit.
Developing a crisis budget well in advance of an event can reveal weaknesses in your financial picture
God’s word is clear that our future while on the earth is uncertain.Ecclesiastes11:2 says, For you do not know what misfortune may occur upon the earth.
James 4, verses 13 and 14 tell us, Now listen, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.
