A man steps up to the counter in the bank and says Reach for the sky! This is a stickup! Unfortunately, the man works for the bank and the person being robbed is you!
Banks aren’t doing anything illegal but there are some bank offerings that are not in the customer’s best interest and you might want to consider opting out of some of them. They include:
Overdraft protection and it’s excessive fees
1. Allows you to overspend while charging huge fees when it happens.
2. In some cases, one instance of overdraft protection can cost as much as 240% of the original intended purchase.
3. Can have the effect of making you financially lazy.
4. You can use mobile apps or budgeting programs that allow you to get instant balance notifications and head off NSF charges.
5. You can place early warning notifications on your bank accounts that allow you to take preemptive corrective action when your account dips too low.
ATM’s -- Banks charge up to $4.50 for single transactions outside your bank’s network
Money transfer fees -- there are several free options through third party outfits
Foreign transaction fees -- Check banks that offer Fee Free transactions
