Main Theme: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can define him, but the things that come out of a person are what define him.

Law: What comes out of a person defiles him.

Gospel:  Chirst gives his righteousness to replace our defilement

 Christ Saves Us Pharisees

Main Theme: Christ breaks our attempts to create our own law, and our own way to achieve salvation.  He crushes us our self-righteousness, keeps the law in our place, and sacrifices himself for us as atonement.

Law: Just like the Pharisees, we create our own ways to be righteous and ignore the law.

Gospel:  Christ knows the law, keeps it for us, and sacrifices Himself in our place, not only wiping the slate clean, but uniting us with Him and crediting us with His righteousness.

Christ reveals how God saves us

Main Theme: Christ reveals how God saves us and our role in salvation.  God does the work, the work of God is to believe, and God creates that faith through word and sacrament.

Law: We constantly try to participate in our own salvation, and to treat Christ as a cosmic candy machine, expecting to get what we want because of our contributions.

Gospel:  Christ is the Bread of Life that gives us eternal life, overcoming our sinful efforts and desires through His word and sacrament, breaking His body for us on the cross, feeding us unto new life through the Eucharist.

Christ’s Inheritance 

Main Theme: Christ unites us with Himself, taking on our sin and earning the reward of inheritance for us.

Law: On our own, we have cut ourselves off from God and renounced our ties to His family. 

Gospel:  Christ emptied himself to become our brother, stands in our place to drink God’s cup of wrath down to the dregs, wins merit and status as the true heir and grafts us into that status through our baptism and uniting us with His blood in a real union through the Eucharist.

 Astonishing Unbelief

Main Theme: Christ is rejected by His people and was astonished at their unbelief.  He repays their scorn by living perfectly for them, and substituting His life for theirs on the cross.

Law: On our own, we reject Christ with astonishing unbelief.  

Gospel:  Christ regenerates us, supplies His own righteousness as a substitute, then freely gives us the means of belief through His Word, in baptism and at the eucharist.

Unclean for Us

Main Theme: Christ becomes unclean to save His us from death.  He touches a sick woman and a dead girl to heal them and bring her back to life.  He ultimately becomes unclean and hangs on a tree to heal us and raise us from the dead.

Law: We are unclean because of our sinful nature and our actively breaking the Law.

Gospel:  Christ takes our uncleanliness unto Himself and God punishes Him in our place on the cross and credits His merits to us, and renders us clean through baptism, then hosts us for table fellowship at the Eucharist.

God Takes the Blame

Main Theme: We fall in Eden, and, as sinners, blame each other.  God promises redemption in Christ, through whose substitutionary life and sacrificial death, take the blame for our sin on the cross.

Law: We chose to defy God in Eden and betrayed Him, then blame each other and Him.

Gospel:  God promises redemption in Christ, then passes the blame and punishment onto Christ and pours out the curse for us upon Him.  He credits us with Christ’s perfection

Trinity

Main Theme: The Trinity is a mystery and a core foundation of our faith.

Law: We cannot understand God, because we are finite and our intellect is impaired by sin.

Gospel:  Christ’s substitutionary death is effective regardless of our level of understanding.  So too is the Trinity and the sacraments.
