Day of Pentecost

Main Theme: Christ ascends to heaven and sends the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit testifies to Chist.  We know He is present, not when we feel a certain way, but when Christ is preached and His sacraments are administered.

Law: We think we are the test for whether the Holy Spirit is here and active based on how we feel.

Gospel:  The Holy Spirit works objectively, regardless of how we feel.  He unites us to Christ through faith from the Word preached and communicates Christ’s body and benefits to us in the sacraments.

The Man Who Rules Heaven

Main Theme: Christ ascends to heaven to take his place on the throne of the universe, as reward for His substitutionary death and resurrection for us.

Law: Christ ascension comes only after His resurrection from His death, the death your sins merit.

Gospel:  Christ united you to Himself, His death, resurrection and ascension.  The man who stand i the presence of God is your brother, friend and advocate, who binds you to Himself through Word and Sacrament.

Abide in My Love

Main Theme: God is a good vinedresser.  You are branches connected to Christ the vine.  Christ explains this is why you will abide in His love.

Law: Love one another just as Christ loved us.

Gospel:  We did not choose Christ, but rather Christ chose us.  He loves us with the greatest love, laying down his life for us.  We abide in His love through His Word and Sacrament.

The Vine Dresser

Main Theme: God is a good vinedresser.  You are branches connected to Christ the vine.  God tends to your growth and your bearing fruit.  He prunes the branches, which is unpleasant and may cause pain, but so that they can bear more fruit and for their ultimate good.

Law: Branches that do not bear fruit will be tossed away.

Gospel:  Your fruit is not your own, but rendered good and acceptable because you are connected to Christ the vine.  Christ continues to feed and sustain you through His Word and Sacrament.
