The Turn

The crowds cheer Christ on as a worldly king.

Then the crowds turn on Christ once they see He’s here to suffer.

We are all part of that crowd, turning on Christ wanting redemption on our terms.

God turns Christ’s death from defeat to cosmic triumph, through His suffering.

We join Christ in suffering the mundane of life and receive ultimate victory.

The Kingdom

Christ tells Pilot His kingdom is not of this world.

It’s not an empire, a political act, church buildings, or clergy.

Christ’s kingdom comes through the King’s actions.

Christ initiated His kingdom through his perfect life and sacrificial death.

Christ continues His kingdom through Word and Sacrament, and our response.

What We Need

The Hidden Figure

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

The hidden figure in this verse is death, who hunts us all successfully.

Death pierced Him with its fangs but choked and Christ overcame, rose from the dead.

Christ lived in our place and died for us, vanquishing this figure for us

Because of Christ’s merits and substitutionary death, we will live again after death.

Christ’s Witnesses

Caiaphus and the chief priests seek to bear false witness against Christ.

We all do the same, delighting in thinking the worst of our neighbor, rather than the best.

Christ keeps the law perfectly in our place, and never bears false witness.

We are free to respond to Christ’s life and death by helping our neighbor.

We help our neighbor by not bearing false witness, and putting them in the best possible light.

Christ chases the money changers out of the temple.

Commerce in the worship profaned the sacred.

Christ keeps the law perfectly in our place.

God gives us good gifts and we return a portion of what He gives us.

We offer time, services, and gifts as a response to Christ’s work.

Judas betrays Christ.

We betray Christ with our sins, sending Him to the cross.

We also betray ourselves, our sinful self betraying the good we would do.

Christ’s life and death covers our betrayal, blots out our sin.

Peter protested that Christ had to suffer and die.

Christ says that is from Satan, the adversary or opponent. 

The other disciples, and we, would think the same.

God forbids us from being holier than Him, crafting our own salvation.
