We pray in this fifth petition of the Lord's Prayer, "forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us." If God does not forgive us we are lost and our conscience is not strengthened.
We acknowledge we are not worthy of the things for which we pray because of our daily sin. We understand we deserve nothing but punishment, yet we ask that our Father in heaven would give to us, by grace, the things for which we pray.
Separately, we acknowledge that we will sincerely forgive and gladly do good to those who sin against us as a marker of God's forgiveness, not a condition of our forgiveness.
