This week, we’re reviewing the classic film “Barikad” by Richard Senecal. What happens when a maid from the Haitian poor countryside meets a boy from a wealthy Port-au-Prince middle-class family? Unexpected and disturbing love in a highly conventional society. A story of tenderness and sorrow.

Our interview with Richard explores his intention behind the film and some of the themes that he was trying to get across. We also discuss how the film’s themes are relevant to the situation that is developing in Haiti as of July 2018.

This week we take a serious look at the issue of deportation. Deported follows several men in Haiti who have one thing in common: they have been deported from the US or Canada. A striking film, this documentary shares the stories of these men and how they cope with living in a land they are not familiar with.

US policy requires the repatriation of all foreign residents who have been convicted of crimes. Bi-monthly, about 50 Haitians are deported from the United States; 40 percent are convicted legal residents who did their time in America. Canada has a similar policy although the numbers are lower.

Our exclusive interview with Rachele Magloire, Co-Director of the acclaimed film “Deported” dives into a candid conversation about the issues facing Haitians who had been living in the US legally, then convicted of a crime and subsequently deported to Haiti. We talk about the plight of these people, how she was able to find them, the relevance of this film in today’s climate around immigration and much, much more.

Created by New York-based artist Richard Louissaint, the Haitian Creatives Series is an ongoing video and photo documentary project. It first began as a long-term project to document fusion band Zing Experience in 2010, but as a result of his developing friendship with the Zing, he began to meet a new community of Haitian creatives. This is about them…the musicians, the painters, the radio hosts, the actors, the singers and all the other creators. This week we interview producer and director Richard Louissaint about this and other irons in the fire.
