Don’t just make a point. Use stories to illustrate your points.
Stories build relationships.
Stories connect with audiences.
I can make a point about being passionate about supporting girls and women in technology.
However, that’s not enough.
I also want to support my point with a story:
Growing up, I loved math and science. I was a total geek.
But I didn’t know what a career looked like with that passion.
It wasn’t until a female engineer came to my high school and spoke about the many facets of engineering that I realized how I can apply my love of math and science.
This stranger changed the trajectory of my life.
Back in 1998, only 25% of my engineering class were females. Today, that statistic is not much higher, if not lower.
So whenever I have opportunities to speak with girls about a career in technology or support them in some way, I rarely say no.
Notice the power of a story.
Go ahead, tell your stories.
I guarantee it will stay with people much longer than a singular point.
