On this Friday night episode of Faust News we’re talking about Ron DeSantis’s proposal to prohibit companies from suspending the account of a political candidate, or be subject to a fine of $100,000 for each day the account is blocked, as well as other regulations such as requiring an option to opt out of content filters. He believes that big tech is exerting a “monopoly power” over the public flow of information. This measure marks the widest range of regulatory solutions ever proposed by a U.S. state to tackle the problem of tech censorship.
We have a new segment called “History - then and now”. We’re taking some time to honor Robert Smalls, an extraordinary man who was born into slavery in 1839, and through pure determination and strength of will, broke free from his chains by stealing a Confederate military cargo transport ship, surrendering to the union, and went on to meet President Lincoln and become a South Carolina representative and senator. We contrast this with the King County Library System in Washington, which has been holding segregated DEI, or Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, sessions. Jeff Bezos has stepped down as the CEO of Amazon, 27 years after founding the company. He will transition to the role of executive chair on July 1st, 2021, leaving Andy Jassy, the current Chief Executive of Amazon Web Services to take over. Bezos says this move is to allow him to focus on other things, such as “the Day 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin, The Washington Post, and my other passions.”
Parler Ceo John Matze has been fired after a fight with Rebekah Mercer, who controls Parler’s board, about the future of free speech on Parler. Matze said that he felt Parler had to step up its content-policing efforts. After Amazon Web Services terminated Parler, and the Google and Apple App stores removed Parler from their listings ,due to Parler’s platform being used to plan the January 6th Capitol Riot. Parler has been forced to change the way they operate in order to restore the some 15 million users they had prior to the ban. Maybe firing the CEO is the first step to restoration. Douglass Mackey, a social media influencer who operated under the name Ricky Vaughn, was arrested in his home in Florida on January 27th for creating false and misleading infographics designed to fool people into believing they could vote for Hillary Clinton over text messages in the 2016 presidential election. While he has been charged with election interference, some are defending him, such as Tucker Carlson, saying he was just creating memes.
