In 2016, Medical Assistance in Dying was legalized in Canada by the Liberal government.

Canada now has some of the loosest laws in the world concerning Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD)—in 2023 this will be expanded to those with mental illness.

In its original form, MAiD was legalized exclusively for Canadians suffering from serious and incurable physical illnesses, with a high likelihood of dying in the foreseeable future. There was also a 10 day waiting period to give time for people to re-consider, thereby vulnerable Canadians from making an irreversible decision under duress.

In 2021 the Liberal government expanded the scope and allowed those who are not terminal but have been diagnosed with remediable, incurable, and intolerable suffering to be legally eligible for MAiD. They also removed the 10 day waiting period. Canadians who are not terminal can now request, and receive, MAiD in the same day.

A joint Parliamentary committee of the House of Commons and Senate recently released a report reviewing the law. The report gave support for this expansion and said safeguards are sufficient as long as they are interpreted correctly. However, witnesses flagged this as problematic stating that there is no official scientific definition for irremediable, incurable, and intolerable suffering. Mental Health advocates have also warned that the current legislative trend could leave those who are depressed and suicidal vulnerable to making an irreversible decision that could have been prevented with proper emotional counselling.

Nicole Sheidl of Canadian Physicians for Life and Angelina Ireland of the Delta Hospice Society join us to discuss the impacts of this recent expansion, and share their observations from the front lines.

Last week we aired part 1 of a 2 part series on the Conservative party of Canada (CPC) Leadership Race, currently underway. This is part 2.

The current CPC leadership race could determine who the next Prime Minister of Canada is. This is because, in Canada, we tend to vote Liberal for a season and then flip back to Conservative.

With Justin Trudeau and the current Liberal party approaching 8 years in power, the chances of a CPC win in the next general election (expected in 2025) is high.

Translation: this current leadership race will impact all Canadians (one way or another).

Roe vs Wade, the famous US Supreme Court ruling on abortion (1973) was over-ruled as unconstitutional yesterday.

The events in the USA have already been impacting the conversation in our nation of Canada even though Canada has a very different legislative reality on the issue.

In 1988 the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the abortion law at the time and tasked Parliament to bring forward a new law.

No Parliament has yet done this, and therefore there is no law on abortion in Canada.

In the absence of a law, anything goes.
This means, technically, abortion is legal in Canada up until full term birth, at taxpayers expense and for any reason.

It is clear that most Canadians, pro-life as well as pro-choice, are uncomfortable with full term abortion in the case of a healthy child and pregnancy.

In anticipation of the Roe vs Wade announcement, last week I sat down with Jakki Jeffs of Alliance for Life and Tabitha Ewert of We Need A Law. Both of them have been watching this issue closely for decades.

We discussed the case, Canada's laws and the possible implications of what is happening in the US on our nation.

This is scheduled to air across Canada tomorrow on TV but we are posting it here a day early in light of yesterday's announcement.

Note: This show was recorded PRIOR to the overturning of Roe v Wade.

The Hon.Brian Peckford is the last living contributor to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and is widely considered an expert on the matter. He is also currently suing the federal government for breaching his mobility charter rights.

On April 19, 2022, Mr. Peckford gave a powerful speech at the Legislative Assembly in BC, laying out several things that he believes we need to do as Canadians in order to effect positive change for our future.
