We don’t have to have it all together in order to serve God well. John 20 shows us a man who was honest about his doubts but earnestly sought understanding, and in seeking Jesus, Thomas’ life was radically changed forever. This passage shows us that Knowledge and conviction of the life-changing reality of the Resurrection of Jesus comes only through personal faith and submission to Him and His Word.

We see this morning in John 20 that The resurrection of Jesus signals an entirely new beginning and era in history. Only in believing and receiving the risen Jesus may we experience and join in with new creation.

Thus, In His crucifixion we see that by His death Jesus fulfills what Adam, Israel, and David had been called to be: The King to rule over the world and bring God’s peaceful reign and presence on earth.

Jesus has come to reign by redeeming humanity and creation from their bondage to sin and death. God’s sovereign purposes to fill the earth with His glory and bless the nations is perfectly accomplished through the crucifixion of King Jesus.

By the images and details John includes here he wants us to see Jesus as not just overcoming all things, or reversing the downward spiral of all things, but as making all things new, restoring creation, humanity, and the truth of God. John shows us that Jesus’ mission is to restore that which God made in the very beginning by bringing the Kingdom of God to earth and making all things new and true.

What He is praying for is what God most desires to do in you and, thus, should be your main focus in life. What Jesus’ prayer in John 17 teaches us is that Jesus prays for the Father to complete the Mission through His disciples, uniting them in the love of the Triune God.

John 16 shows us that Through His death and resurrection, Jesus sealed the victory of the new age over the old, defeating the rebellious powers of this present age, and through His Church will consummate the Kingdom of God.

In this farewell discourse to His disciples, Jesus teaches all of us that The Holy Spirit makes it possible for Jesus’ followers to be completely identified with Him in our character, our actions, and our witness.

As we continue, thus, this morning in Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples, we see in His words that Through grace alone by faith alone in Jesus alone we are taken up into the very relationship of the Father and the Son, whereby we become the people of God entitled to all the promises and responsibilities pertaining thereto.
