Butch Martin has Allison Clayton, her law students and Texas Tech University to thank for his freedom. When Texas Tech's Innocence Clinic got involved in his case, Allison and third-year law students believed Butch would get the justice he deserved. In 2023, they saw that come to fruition.

A house fire killed Butch Martin’s wife and two children in 1999. He was sentenced to life in prison. After serving 24 years of that sentence, he was exonerated through the work of faculty and students at Texas Tech’s School of Law.
