In John 13, we move into what is often called "The Last Supper". John dedicates five chapters to this night as Jesus gives His final encouragement and instruction to the eleven disciples. And He starts with love: first He models it, then He calls them to do it. But the secret to being able to love one another may not be what you think.

Chapter 12 of the Gospel of John is a full one! With fifty verses and several stories, it can seem overwhelming. But as Jesus approaches "the hour" and if we keep John's intent for writing this book in mind, we will see a thread leading us not only to the cross, but pointing us to belief in Jesus as King, Messiah, and Son of God. This chapter also causes us to ask some hard questions of ourselves as we reflect on what it means to follow Him.

While Martha gets a bad rap, here John points to her solid faith, and Jesus speaks His fifth I AM Statement to this grieving sister: I AM the Resurrection and the Life. Jesus knows going to Bethany will ultimately lead to His death, but He goes willingly to lay down His life for His friend (as He said He would in John 10). The result of this miracle brings great glory to God but also sets in motion a string of events that will eventually lead to Jesus’ death.

The Shaking - that's what I have called 2020. It's a year that has rocked many of us, but the shaking has purpose. As we pursue Jesus, as we run the race with our eyes fixed on Him, we remove the things that hinder us. And nothing tends to bring that out like trials. In Hebrews 12, we find encouragement for how to keep running and why to keep running after Jesus, our Way Maker.

Jesus is the more and better sacrifice. He is the more and better Tabernacle. For us in 2020, these phrases may not mean much, but to the Jewish readers of this letter, it was a powerful reminder of the finality of Jesus' sacrifice that secured eternal redemption once for all. In Hebrews 7, the author continues to encourage us: Jesus is better. The promise He makes, what He did on the cross, it is better. But even more so, we get this amazing picture of what it means that Jesus intercedes for us. It's so much more than prayer.
