Our first full week of study was an incredible one. We start with a young man, eager and ready to learn but move toward a man who is desperate for God to reveal Himself while he is in the midst of hard circumstances. This week really challenged me in how I respond to God and the cries of my own heart when faced with trials. God’s Word brings life and so much more, and our gracious God is faithful to answer to the prayer “Show me more of you.”

Psalm 119 tells us that the unfolding of His Word gives light (v. 130) and by it, we have life (v. 93). Light & Life. In this first session, Erin Warren shares the context and background for Psalm 119 and walks through the first stanza (verses 1-8) as an example of how this study works. We often think of the Law of the Old Testament as obsolete, but obedience of His Word matters. Because Jesus perfectly obeyed the Law, as we are becoming more like Jesus, we also move toward obedience.

We did it! We made it through the entire Gospel of John. Chapter 21 is widely considered an epilogue to this book. John has cultivated these stories to lead us to belief. But what now? What do we do once we know Jesus is Messiah and Son of God? We can often over interpret this passage, but the call Jesus gives us here is really quite simple.

HE IS RISEN! In chapter 20, John brings to the pinnacle of the story: death did not win. The grave is defeated and we no longer fear. Jesus is alive! And with this seventh and final sign, He forever proves that He is who He says He is. He is the Christ, the Son of God and believing in Him brings life. As word spreads of the empty tomb, doubts and confusion rise. But Jesus tenderly and deliberately meets with His disciples and leads them back to Himself. And John concludes this passage with his purpose for writing it all down: so you will believe. He leads us again to that point where we must decide for ourselves.

John 19 is one I wish somedays I could skip. I want to jump right to the Resurrection and the light and the joy of that Sunday morning. It’s hard right from verse one to read in detail what our Jesus suffered. But as Matthew Henry says, "It is good for every one with faith, to behold Christ Jesus in his sufferings. Behold him, and love him; be still looking unto Jesus.” As Jesus hangs on that cross, He does something we could never do for ourselves. And through His death, it is finished. His death paid a debt that we could cover and purchased for us a freedom more than just forgiveness of sins or heaven. He became the Way Maker.

This chapter, like Chapter 18, held so many little details I had never seen before. It’s what I love about this format of Bible study. The slow reading of Scripture allows it to marinate in our hearts and minds. This week we are in John 18 and as we move not only toward the cross in Scripture, we are moving toward Easter on the calendar. I love this holiday and it’s a good time to reflect and remember what Jesus’ sacrifice accomplished. Studying John has forever marked my faith in Him and that’s John’s intent: that you would believe Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God and that you would have life in His name. I felt like I was reading this passage for the first time - there were so many details in this passage I never noticed before (including a little dig at Peter) and I know I’ve read these passages over and over. That’s what I love about studying Scripture this way and slowly studying. There is so much irony in this passage today, and we see again John lead to the decision point: will we believe? Or will we choose our own way?

In John 17, Jesus prays not only over His disciples, but over all who would come to faith in Jesus Christ. That's us! This prayer gives us an incredible picture of Jesus and what He does for us. In the midst of sorrow and fear, He reassures them (and us) that they are Kept, Guarded, Sanctified, One and Glory Bearers.

Jesus is giving His final words of encouragement to His disciples before His arrest. In Chapter 16, this culminates with His reminder that though He must leave, He is not leaving them to fend for themselves. He tenderly and patiently guiding their sorrow filled hearts toward joy and promises peace, even in the midst of the hardships that are coming.

This passage is a favorite among Christians: Jesus' call for us to abide. As Jesus walks closer to the cross, He continues His charge to His disciples, but not without reminding them again the only way to love and do as He did is to remain connected to the True Vine. Abiding is not another activity or "to do;" it's an invitation.

If I could use one word to describe John 14 it would "radical." As Jesus continues preparing and encouraging His disciples at the Last Supper, He takes their religion and flips it on its head, not only changing the way they relate to God, but also promising them His presence in a way "common men" had never experienced before.
