In this podcast, Erin Warren teaches on Exodus 14-15. In Exodus 14, the Israelites experience one of the greatest and most well-known miracles in all of the Bible: the crossing of the Red Sea. While we love to make this a story of miraculous rescue and use it to show how God miraculously can also rescue us from the seemingly "no way out" circumstances, we must continue to remember this is a story about God's character. And His call to us in this story is not to sit and watch but hear and move.  We learn that where we look matters, and the result of this miracle leads the people of God toward belief and worship.

But we are most vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy when we are rejoicing in victory. In Exodus 15, we see a song of praise melt into shouts of complaint at Marah. The people are thirsty, but God is after our hearts. He provides not only sweet water, but a place of refreshment and rest. Both stories point us to the only source of our salvation: Jesus. We must continue to lock eyes on our Savior before us and not the circumstances around us.

In this video, Erin Warren teaches on Exodus 12 and 13 (The Passover, the Exodus, the Pillar of Cloud, and the Pillar of Fire). After nine consecutive plagues and nine negative answers from Pharaoh, God gives one final act of judgement in the plague of the death of the firstborn. But, God would provide a way for His people, the people of Israel, to escape the plague. The way becomes a feast of remembrance: the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. In the wake of tragedy, Pharaoh and the Egyptians force the Israelites out in the middle of the night with a special provision provided by God. God leads the people not on the short route, but purposely by way of the wilderness. He does not leave them there alone. Through the stories in Exodus 12-13, God miraculously proves His character as He births a nation.

The Wilderness. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines wilderness as an empty or pathless area or region. The wilderness is uncharted territory. It is the place where we feel lost, not knowing where to go because there is not a path to follow. But, as we will see throughout this study: it was not uncharted territory for the Great I AM, the Creator of the World. He often leads by way of wandering, not the most direct route. He leads in places that feel pathless and empty. Because there are some lessons about God that can be learned in the fertile soil of the wilderness. While the wilderness is often used to describe a hard circumstance in our life, as Christians, it's also a picture of our life on earth: We've been redeemed, saved from slavery to sin and we are bound for the Promised Land, heaven. But in between, we are wandering in a land that is not our home. But God does not leave us here to fend for ourselves, instead, He walks with us, before, and provides for us as we go.

In this video, Erin Warren sets up the Stories from the Wilderness study, including how to use the study book and the study format. She also discusses the important context information to help set the lens through which we will study (who wrote it, what's going on in history at that time, etc) and recaps Genesis 46-50 and Exodus 1-11 to lay the groundwork for our first week of study.

This is often story we see as a list of what not to do. We judge the Israelites harshly for the way they continue to complain and question. But this is not their story. It's the story of God, the Redeemer and Faithful One, and throughout the coming weeks, we will see Him reveal and prove His character over and over and over again. We will see that the God of the Promised Land is the same God in the Wilderness.

The wilderness. It is a place that feels hard, empty, lifeless and pathless, and it often leaves us with questions about who God is. But while we see a place that is worthless, confusing, and chaotic, God sees a place to display His power. Time and time again throughout Scripture, God takes the worthless, seemingly wasteful, confusing, chaotic, and empty places and uses them as a backdrop to prove His character, draw us in, and display His glory.

Psalm 119:153-176 (Resh, Sin & Shin, Taw) continues to builds on previous stanzas. We have seen a growth of passion and depth of maturity develop throughout the Psalm, and it brings us to the final (and somewhat unexpected) end this week. But through it all, the Psalmist continues to show how knowing God’s Word (and knowing it is true and eternal) brings life even when faced with affliction. Knowing God’s Word brings abundant peace, keeps us from stumbling, and results in complete worship. And we can humble ourselves before our Great Shepherd. His Word is Light & Life.

In Psalm 119:129-152 (Pe, Tsadhe, & Qoph), we see a maturing, a life that is steadily step by step, day by day, following after God. He continues to see God’s Word as guide, a light that gives understanding and exposes our sin. He has a right view of God, and our view of His character shapes our response to His Word. Finally, he prays. But at the end of it, it's about the nearness of God and a life lived in long obedience in the direction of His Word. It builds a firm and secure foundation - one that never changes and remains pure and blameless for all eternity.

In Psalm 119:105-128 (Nun, Samekh, Ayin), we see the Psalmist (most likely David) point again and again to His steadfast pursuit of God’s Word - to know it, to understand it, to seek the One who wrote it. He knows the benefit of a life that does not walk away from the Word. Even when his timeline doesn’t match God’s, it is His reverence and awe and Holy fear that keeps him following God. He holds both grace and truth, forgiveness and justice in his hands as he walks through life. And the result is a life that focuses on the eternal. He loves God’s commands, and that leads to a life that loves truth and a life that hates any other way.

In Psalm 119:81-104 (Kaph, Lamedh, & Mem), the psalmist reaches his most desperate point. The plea for his life, for justice, and for saving mark the middle point of this poem. Yet, he still clings to God’s Word. As we move into the second half, the script flips and we see an incredible picture of Creator God, the One who established this earth and keeps it in motion and holds it together. And if He can hold this world together, He can hold you together in your hardship, trials, and affliction. What a picture of the God who not only walks with us through suffering, but preserves our souls in the midst of it too.

In Psalm 119:57-80 (Heth, Teth, and Yodh), we see a common theme: I’m not enough without God. And He can be trusted, even when we are smeared with lies or walking through affliction. We often ask “Why is this happening?” Or “Why do bad things happen to good people?” But God uses suffering. Suffering leads us to God, and there are some lessons about God we can only learn in the fertile soil of suffering. We get the choice: we can run away from the One who has all we need or we choose to trust Him, lean into Him, and allow Him to teach us the truth of who He is through His Word.

In this week’s study of Psalm 119, we read through He, Waw, and Zayin. We see an incredible prayer that points us to what God can do in our lives when we humbly approach His Word and ask for God to show us more His character. No matter what affliction, trial, hardship, darkness we are facing, He is there: the God of ALL comfort, the God of Truth, the One who steadfastly loves us.
