  • Episode 9: The Gospel of John - Chapter 8

In John 8, Jesus makes His second “I AM” statement: I am the Light of the World. He says these words on the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, and once again, uses an imperfect, insufficient earthly example of how He fulfills for eternity. But we also see His kindness and tenderness toward a woman caught in her sin. It’s a beautiful picture of how He responds to us as well.

And then again, we see the religious leaders debating with Jesus about who He really is. They kept missing it, and John continues to point us to the truth: Jesus is Messiah, sent from God, to save us all. Jesus is truth.

  • Episode 8: The Gospel of John - Chapter 7

In John 7, all of Jewish people have converged in Jerusalem for the fall feast: the Feast of Tabernacles. This jubilant celebration was one of the most joyous times in Jewish year. And it is here, in the midst of this elation, that Jesus stands up for all to hear and makes a bold claim. It’s one we heard Him make in a private conversation at a well in Samaria; now He proclaims it for all to hear: He is the source of Living Water. He shows them how this feast is picture of Him, their Messiah.

        • Episode 7: The Gospel of John - Chapter 6

John Chapter 6 is a long one! Honestly, this chapter could be a study on its own. But these 71 verses give us such a picture of Jesus as our sustaining life-giver. I love how John juxtaposes these three stories together: the Feeding of the 5,000, Jesus walking on water, and His teaching in Galilee that He is the Bread of Life. It gives us this beautiful picture of how Jesus is the more and better manna and the fulfillment of Passover.

              • Episode 6: The Gospel of John - Chapter 5

John 5 marks the start of a new section of stories, but John continues to point us to Jesus as Messiah. In this passage, we see Jesus talking about the Sabbath, but even more so: how He and the Father are one. It can be confusing and hard to understand, but the heart of Jesus’ words again point us to this: Jesus is True. Jesus is God. And He came bring to life.

                • What did God draw your attention to this week?
                • SPECIFIC QUESTIONS FOR CHAPTER 5:

                  • Read Matthew 11:25-30, 12:14 - What is this rest Jesus is talking about here? How is Jesus the Lord of the Sabbath? How does His coming redefine Sabbath? How should we treat Sabbath?
                    • To help: Jesus is releasing them from the ritual and law of Sabbath - true rest for our souls is found in knowing our eternity is secure in Him - not in a works-based faith, but in grace and forgiveness. We do not have to carry that burden anymore. That then should affect how we Sabbath, why we Sabbath, and how we walk this out in day-to-day trust of Him.
                    • Jesus continually puts people (healing people, reconciling people) over tradition and ritual. Where do we tend to put tradition (things that are religious in nature but not in scripture) over caring for and reconciling people to Him? Or what do we prioritize over God Himself?
                    • Read Hebrews 2:1 - What is the difference between His Word abiding in us and us drifting? How do we protect ourselves from this happening?

                      • Episode 5: The Gospel of John - Chapter 4

In John Chapter 4, we read about Jesus' conversation with a Samaritan woman, a woman who had no hope of fitting in or belonging, a woman who was desperate, a woman looking for earthly satisfaction. Yet Jesus, putting aside cultural rules, met her and made the greatest statement about Himself. We also see the power and truth of His Word in a miracle, the saving of a young boy's life. One conversation, face-to-face; one sign, performed at a distance. Both both us to our Messiah.

John Chapter 3 contains the world's most famous Bible verse, but studying John 3:16 in context provides a deeper insight. This story is the gospel, yes, but it's a powerful picture of what Jesus' coming meant. The visual Jesus gives of Moses lifting the serpent in the wilderness, the comparison of darkness and light, and John the Baptist's well-known words of Jesus all point us to the truth of Who Jesus is: Messiah, Savior, Sovereign, Life, and Light.

There are three main sections to this passage this week, but each one has the same purpose: declaring Jesus as God.

Before beginning any Bible study, it's important to understand the context. We have to remember that while the Bible is written for us, we were not the original audience. Asking some simple, easy questions helps us set the lens through which we will study this particular book.

You can find more in-depth teaching on how to study context at feastingontruth.com/howto.
