Today is February 8th.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Take a moment and quiet yourself. Take a deep breath. Welcome God’s presence. And say, “Come Holy Spirit.”
Today’s reading is from Psalm 92.
It is good to praise the Lord
and make music to your name, O Most High,
proclaiming your love in the morning
and your faithfulness at night,
to the music of the ten-stringed lyre
and the melody of the harp.
For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord;
I sing for joy at what your hands have done.
How great are your works, Lord,
how profound your thoughts!
Senseless people do not know,
fools do not understand,
that though the wicked spring up like grass
and all evildoers flourish,
they will be destroyed forever.
But you, Lord, are forever exalted.
The psalmists are well practiced worshippers. They worship through songs of lament, of celebration, of adoration, of doubt. The psalmists teach us to worship God at all times, and in every situation. Can you turn your attention to worship right now? Or is there something distracting you from turning your attention to God? Offer your distractions to God as a prayer.
Turn your attention now from distractions to the great works of the Lord in your life. As you hear the passage read again… call to mind God’s faithfulness to you. Consider things that you might take for granted; things you think come from your own effort or accomplishment. Is it your hands that have done those things, accomplished all you have, or brought your own successes? Or might it be the Lord’s hands that have provided for you?
The Psalmist tells us that it is good to praise the Lord. But you don’t have to be a musician, a song writer, or a worship leader, to praise God. Do you have your own way of practicing thankfulness, of expressing gratitude to God for who He is? Perhaps you journal your gratitude, or maybe you create something with your hands, or write your own poem to God. Take time today to express worship to God in your own way, with your own words or actions.
Lord God, Almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought me in safety to this new day: Preserve me with your mighty power, that I may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all I do, direct me to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
