Feelin' Film

This week we are covering one of our favorite films of all-time, Christopher Nolan's magical masterpiece - The Prestige. It is a film we talk about often and yet it still feels full of untapped discussion potential. Yes, there is plenty of magic, but there is also a deep (and brilliantly acted) character study about obsession and the lengths some will go to win. Come listen as we break it down as best we can and try to do justice to a movie that provokes our thoughts and feelings, and is endlessly re-watchable.

This week we journey back into the wizarding world for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first film in a lengthy new series set in the USA. It's impossible to discuss this film without talking about the expectations fans of Harry Potter go into the movie with. We also have a great conversation about the difference in writing a new screenplay and adapting an already completed novel. We may not have thought everything about this film was fantastic, but there is plenty to like and it was fun working our way through it.

In this minisode, we tackle the deep themes in Denis Villeneuve's new science fiction masterpiece, Arrival. Based on a Ted Chiang short story called “Story of Your Life”, Arrival tells the story of an alien race who has landed on earth and humanity's attempts to understand why. This is a movie that falls into the thinking science fiction genre and we have a great time feeling and thinking our way through it together.

It's another Halloween-centric episode for this October and one of the best animated musicals ever made. We geek out over our love for Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, a film with a great message, incredible music, and unique characters. Freshman director Nate Parker's passion project tells the story to Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher who initiates a deadly uprising in the American south. There is plenty to talk about and consider in this movie, which is becoming quite divisive - inspiring both audience protests and garnering quite a bit of Oscar buzz.
