The Apostle Paul collected money to take to struggling Christians in Jerusalem. This was an important project to Paul, showing up multiple places in the New Testament. In today’s passage Paul encourages the Corinthians to follow through on their participation. In the process, he helps us understand the role of giving in the life of the Christian.

A talisman is an object that is believed to have magic powers or to bring good luck. It is a means of controlling the supernatural for the owner's benefit. Even Israel was not immune to believing in such superstition, but this passage shows how wrong they were.

This Sunday, we look at our deepest longings and from where our fulfillment comes.

Loneliness is pervasive. Often the Holidays intensify the feeling. The Advent of Christ meets that need in a most meaningful way because the child born to us was known as “God with Us.” The thought of it brought great joy to those in our story.

Where are you placing your hope this advent season? As Mary’s interaction with the angel Gabriel makes clear, there is only one hope that will never fail us, but it will cost us our other hopes. The one hope isn’t a situation, a location, an idea or a thing. It is a person - His name is Jesus.

The Christmas season is filled with longing: for gifts, for renewing relationships, for joyful experiences. But all of us have a deeper longing as well - one that God himself has promised to meet.

This Sunday we finish the Follow Me series by looking at our core purpose. Jesus' final charge to the discples was to be disciple-makers. As disciples, we must join this mission of helping others follow Jesus.
