They call it 'neologism' and it means to make up words. That word itself sounds made up.
But if you're a toddler or the President of The United States (bigly) then when a word seems to hard you substitute it with your own.
Fergal D'Arcy listeners are an imaginative bunch and sent us their best 'neologisms' even though some are 'malapropisms' (we didn't make up that word honest!)
Fergal spoke to Rob who has been plugging away at making words up for years and Emma who once had a very hairy solution for choppers.

Hey! When I was younger I could not for love or money say the word "helicopter". I could only say "hairy doctor". Needless to say my parents thought it was hilarious, until we'd be out in public and I'd be pointing at the sky looking for "hairy doctors" scarlet!!! from Emma in Galway.

We used to call chocolate covered mallows "balliwonkals!!" Had them around Easter. They came in a white box with a freaky bunny on d front. My husband hadn't a clue what i was talking about when we met first!!! So funny. Tanx Linda x

Hi Fergal, my son calls slippers "Bichons" (pronounced like bichon frise) - we have no idea where he got it, he's 11 now and we all still call them bichons! Also, I have a brother called Feargal and called him werkel - still call him werkel! - Michelle
Guy I work with says "ingine" instead engine and package of "crips" instead of packet of crisps and finally "tin of minerals" instead of "can of coke"
