40 Days of Love - Week 2

John 13:34

The best way to learn anything is to learn by example. We always learn faster, quicker and deeper when somebody gives us an example to follow. Who is the best example for love? It’s Jesus Christ. Jesus was the only person with perfect love. Jesus was the only person who had a perfect understanding of relationships. We need to learn how to love from Him.

John 13:34 (GW) – I’m giving you a new commandment: Love each other in the same way that I have loved you.

Romans 13:8; 1 Corinthians 13:13

40 Days of Love is a relational emphasis campaign. Our primary objective along this journey will be to explore the relationship principles we find in Scripture. The model we will follow will be that set by Christ. Our high calling as Christ-followers is to love God supremely and to love people. Today, we consider why love matters most.

Today we launch a new church year! Membership at Field Street matters. And, there are a basic set of expectations we have for members of FSBC: attend, serve, give, pray, and invite. Today, we explore what it means minimally to be a part of Field Street Baptist Church. What does it mean to be an “ideal” church member?

1 Peter 5:6-7

Matthew, chapters 5-7, are commonly called the Sermon on the Mount because Jesus delivered this discourse on a mountainside near Capernaum. We know that at this phase in Jesus’ ministry (the year of popularity), enormous crowds were being captivated by His authoritative teaching. In the text for this morning, Jesus speaks about the fruit which is produced by one’s life

1 Peter 5:6-7

If Christ had lived in our time with cellular capabilities, Peter would have been on his list of favorites. He was one of the “special threesome” that were with Jesus on so many occasions in His ministry. Peter, James and John were privileged to know our Lord in a very special way. Peter knew what it meant to be a follower of Christ and he knew God’s recipe for right living. Let’s look at each part of the recipe and see the ingredients that will help us live a life that is pleasing to God.

In Genesis 17, the Lord appears to Abraham and tells him, “I am God Almighty; walk before Me, and be blameless. And I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly.” In chapter 18, we find Abraham and his wife Sarah, advanced in years and Sarah beyond the point of child-bearing. The Lord appears to him again and tells him that “one year from that day, Sarah would bear him a son.” Genesis 21 tells us of the birth of Isaac, the son of promise. Abraham was 110 years old when Isaac was born. The Scripture describes his feelings for Isaac with the words, “He loved him dearly.” He was not only his son, but it would be through his seed that ultimate deliverance would come through the birth of Christ. But...then came the “midnight hour.”

The text we consider this morning is penetrating...straight from the lips of Jesus. Jesus was constantly confronting the religious teachers and people of His day for their hypocrisy. The objective this morning is to let the light of Scripture shine on our hearts in an effort to discern if we are simply religious or godly.

Colossians 4:7-18

Today, we conclude our voyage through the verses of Colossians. We have gazed with awe and wonder at the surpassingly great, incomparable Savior, Jesus Christ. In these concluding verses of Colossians, Paul identifies several people for which he is grateful and he issues several instructions.
